Ok so I am a newb to toyota stuff so I am sure I will get flamed for this. I have searched here and a few other forums but I am not getting a straight answer. So Ill start with what I have, I have an IFS rear axle from a 88 truck, and a front axle from an 83. I am putting them under my Samurai, my question is how different are the 1976 Landcruiser axles, mostly the rear. I would like to run the offset diff and I was offered both axles here in town for $250. can I put my 88 3rd member in the 76 LC axle is my biggest concern. Or are they different. I have read that the LC 3rd is bigger and the axle looks like it uses C clips and not a 4 bolt flange to hold the axle shafts in. IF anyone knows about this I would appreciate the help. Or am I just a big fawking retard and will the center diff 88 axle be fine with a Dual Cardan Dline.

You are correct about the LC axle, bigger third and IIRC some of them used c-clips. You will be fine with the centered rear, lots of Sami guys do it. Do NOT use a double cardian joint at the top, when you use a DC the other joint needs to be straight, kinda impossible with a compound angle on your driveshaft. Build a shaft with Toyota parts and use a single joint at both ends, 88 1/2 and up sami t-case outputs have the correct bolt pattern but may require some lathe work on the center bore. Make sure the total angle is the same at both ends and you will be fine. The driveshaft does not know it is on a compound angle, all it cares about is total angle.

The problem with the DC is not the angle it can handle, It is the fact that the pinion needs to be pointed straight at the driveshaft which is impossible with a compound angle, even if you get the vertical angle right you will still have horizontal angle. Forget about the fact that some angle is vertical and some is horizontal. just focus on total angle.

Will it bind or just vibrate like a bitch
Odds are it will vibrate. Who knows, maybe it will work fine but it is not the correct part for your application.

All the 93 and older land cruiser rear ends are 9.5" C clip. FJ40-45-55-60-62 etc. All are offset to the passenger side as well. MOST 94-97 Land Cruiser are 9.5" full float with the same offset, although there are some with C clip rears in that year range on basement cruisers. The thirds will not interchange with a pickup / 4runner. The 9.5" rear diffs are near bulletproof as well. Running them out of oil is about the only thing that kills them.

There is a pinion problem with these rearends, like the pinion shaft breaks in half.

Seen that a couple of times. They were in FJ40s behind V8s though. We do a lot of regears on FJ80s and the rear ring and pinions always look beautiful when they come out.

When are we going to go wheeling again old man? :flipoff2:
Yeah, that is what I have seen them on, FJ40 with SBC's.

I am going up to MCR this weekend but we do need to get together and wheel!!!!

That's because the rig gear diameter is large enough to move the weak link to the pinion shaft.

Much like how a Dana 60 will break pinion shafts, or a Ford 9" will blow the pinion support out.

There is always a weak link in a diff (or it moves the weak link up stream in the drivetrain)
