Another small project knocked out today. I cut 3 circular holes in each side of the frame rails and then welded in nuts on each side so I can bolt the transfer case skid plate to the bottom side of the frame rails like typical jeeps. This thing never had any skid plates so this had to be done to bolt on the barnes 4wd CJ skid I got and chopped up.

Onto a few pics. The nuts are welded in place, ground smooth so the skid will fit exactly flat with the underside of the frame. :D

I'm going to add some additional metal to cover the bottomside of the transmission as well. I also have to finish welding and modifying the Barnes 4wd skid. Just haven't gotten that far yet.

Looking great. Quick question. Have you cycled the suspension? Looks like you have way too much up travel on the front shocks. With flat springs like you have you will not need that much up travel and will be limiting your down travel. You should bumpstop so the spring do not go inverted. Inverting them will kill them quick.

Hey Cheepin. My shocks are definitely a little long but they're too long in both directions so when compress or extended, they still work through the full cycle of the suspension. My total shock travel is right around 10" and the shocks are 12" or 14" travel (I can't recall) but they were free so I just cleaned them up and used them. I definitely still have to add bumpstops front and rear and I eventually plan on adding larger tires and possibly a link style suspension so I built the mounts longer than they needed to be for my current setup. I really appreciate the input.

That buddy doesnt help, he just wanted a accuse to get out of the house and drink :flipoff2: Thanks for the help with the xj!
I don't care what your reason is, I just like the garage time with friends! The beer drinking is good too! :D You should post up a pic of your newly fab'd pitman arm on my build so pirate can bash us!

great work
Thanks man!

A buddy of mine brought over a new tool for my garage. I added some sticker swag to my new frig. If youre company isn't on my frig, just send me a sticker and I'll add it. :D

I helped that same buddy build some spring plate / shock tab mounts for his ECORS XJ. They are not done yet, but they should be pretty tough when they're done.

I worked on the skid plate a little more today. No major project on my hoopty though.

I got some 7am fab time in this morning. Loved it! I got the skid plate finished up. I wanted to finish it this weekend so I can mark one more thing off of my to-do list. :D

Inside of skid. You can see where I butchered the original and then had to re-weld and fab in corner pieces along all 4 sides. I about should have just started from scratch but o well. It's done now!

I added a big piece to the front of the skid plate to protect the tranny.

Wide shot of the bottom. It's nice and smooth.

Bolted in place.

Hey brother. Love the skid. Looks great. what is going to stop the longer piece from smashing against the TC or oil Pan when the weight of the vehicle is on the skid? Couldn't quite tell what it was protecting but what is your plans for bracing it?

looks killer man!
Much appreciated!! I'm pretty happy with it (and more happy that it's done).

Thanks man! The front is protecting the SM465 and stops right before the bell housing. No real plans to brace it anymore. The main skid is 3/8" and the front portion is 3/16" on the bottom and sides. I was afraid anymore material would make it too heavy. Do you think I should add more to it? I thought that was enough. Any input is appreciated.

The skid is exactly what I am planning to do on my rig.Only I am going to wrap the outside of the frame and bolt through sidways and tie into the motor mounts.

I don't think you should add metal in any means. 3/16 is all you should need and then some. I would just worry with the head of that sticking out and no support if you hit it hard enough or put the weight of the vehicle alone could push it up into your SM465. I am not quite this far in my build so I couldn't tell you how I would do a skid. I do know people that have smashed their skids into the motor, trans, TC that they usually go back and add more support. If everyone else thinks its good then your probably fine. Just my .02 cents. Great build!

I have 1/4" plate skid over my tranny similar to your setup except it also has a support up to the engine mounts. I have bent that into my tranny pan twice at the Hammers. So it depends on how hard you wheel. I added vertical reinforcement sections to that part and it bent again (the second time). I have to take it apart and add supports in the middle of the skid up to the frame this time.
