my buddy just bought a stock 85 4runner. hes looking to build it into a crawler, and was wondering what you guys would do first?
im thinking lift/tires/hysteer. (tg kit or?)
then longs
then duals
followed by lockers and gears if he feels he wants them. (was thinking arb front detroit rear)
what would you guys suggest? that a pretty decent start or what would you do different?

I would put a suspension lifter kit and 4 wheel driver on it then put a big giant bumper made out of 4" round stock that will stop anything in its path then do the same for sliders and exo cage. Knock out all the windshields and put expanded metal in their places then hit up "Toyota John" and put a hydro driver system on it.

Can't loose with 42's, bitch that's what's up :smokin:

Do whatever you want..make a plan.

I prefer to do suspension work first then duals then build axles.
Build as you wheel..learn your perimeters with your rig..add as you progress/need.
Not everybody ends up building a full on crazy trailwr queen...

Not my rig, i built mine all at once so i never went threw the stages.
Guess im trying to get real world advice as im only 20 and never wheeled anythinh except my runner i built. He would deffinatly be doing suspension first.. But was more asking whats best after that.
Oh and thanks for the smartass remarks, can always get a laigh from you guys

If you built you're rig, why are you asking advice on how to build another:confused:

I would have thought you would have gained some sort of knowledge along the way.

I have the how to knowledge. But not the steps along the way experiance. As in what to upgrade when. His isnt gonna be a super fast build like mine. Hes gonna build and wheel along the way. Mine went from stock to built in one step. So not really sure what was worthy of doing before others..

i would lock it up first :) (make sure you get the gears you want for the tires you will have) i always liked the idea of a stock looking ride that will go almost anywhere you point it...then i would do whatever you wanna do to get some more rubber under it... then slap some bumpers and roll bars all around it in case it goes somewhere you didn't point it

I'd do suspension and cases at the same time. That way you only do drive shafts once. Weld the rear too. If he still has the bug and wants to go further build from there. His wallet is the limit. For suspension I'd use RUF and 63s.

If the runner is pretty clean I would build it over time. Wheel it stock and then build from there. The last thing he would want to do is to take a perfectly good looking runner and turn it into a crawler and then have it looking a total POS like 60% of crawlers on here.

I can completely agree with keeping it.looking nice. I havent seen it, so im not sure if.its clean or not. He pretty much called me up and said its bone stock, where should i start..
And im not exactly to sure, as i busted my ass untili could do everything at once and go wheel hard like i wanted to without.breaking, now all i ever hear is people bitch i didnt build it because im so young. Yet i bought and payed for everything

huuuuge X2 on doing the cases the same time you make the suspension longer taller whatever. building drivelines over and over again because it ends up being an inch short or just a skunt hair too long is fookin stupid. :mad3:

so from my point of view. phase 1: weld the rear diff, cases, drivelines, lift, tires... (if he can swing that kinda dough) this will get him to the mall lookin schnazzy and will be more than enough to take a girl on some light "wheeling" to get the lil pickle wet.. :flipoff2:

then phase 2 will involve strength upgrades and the more major protection items. maybe gears if he needs em. ect ect

bigest thing of all. make him help and learn along the way, ya know catch a fish teach to fish shit? otherwise i foresee a long future of you doing some wrenching while hes on the cell phone.

have fun and start a new thread for the build.

Yeah that would suck. He really should just drop a bunch of money on it and just keep it on the street. It keeps the vendors all in business :D

Bro I wouldn't give a fuck what someone said about you building your truck. Your young and by you building it yourself be proud the only ones who would say that are jealous ass dipshits who probably don't have as nice a looking truck as you do and want to give you a hard time. Fuck em as long as you know what you did. Fuck what some assclowns on a forum think.
