Fuel delivery? / 22R -to- 4.3 TBI swap

I ended up using a 87ish 4runner fuel tank and dropped an 89 chevy AC Delco (chevys brand), factory fuel pump. Should give way more years of use and a hell of a lot quieter than any aftermarket inline fuel pump would. I also put bigger, new 3/8" fuel line in which is what chevy used stock*

Well, I have my motor/tranny ready for the swap; 4.3 TBI/700R4... for my 84 4runner, 22R eng. My biggest snag so far is fuel. I've seen Downey's and A/A's inline fuel pumps, but it must be more involved than that right? I've heard of people that started out life with a 22RE using their stock efi set up and simply changing their pump to the correct psi/gph etc.

I've read many talking about aftermarket inline fuel pumps, but is that with no other mods to their fuel system??? Can you simply through an inline fuel pump on the line of a 22r, (granted it's for the 4.3 TBI eng), and throw the emergency cut off switch, for when the engine stalls??? Or is their more to it than that

I know Vova was going to use a 22re tank in his swap and then put the chevy tbi sending unit into this tank with minor adj... can I just do this with my 22r, (non efi) tank? And if I did use an EFI tank, isnt there more to it than just the tank? Alot more electronics, relays etc. on the 22re fuel system?

im doing the same swap..except ive got the running astro van for the swap...i just plan on intergating the van tank and lines into my toyota...should work fine...

I hvae used both methods of pumps... ie. inline and in-tank. I liked the intank better overall. I just bought a pump for the vehicle, like a astro van for instance. It mated right up for me. I used stock lines and adapted th factory lines from the astro.

Theres lots of info on these swaps and a serch goes a long way around here with all the info from everyone.

Camo Kid, are you saying you put the pump into a 22r tank? Just curious.

And about the whole search thing, thanks, been there done that. Like I said above I've read all there is to read, Lot's of info, fuel pump,, tanks, etc, but nothing with my specific question, thanks. Hence the post... And hey anyone want to prove me wrong :) pleeeez send me the link while your at it...

You can use the Toyota EFI fuel pickup/pump assembly as long as you dont' use the Toyota pump. It is too much pressure for a TBI system and trying to use a regulator to keep the pressure at about 13psi will just burn the pump up prematurely.

Just get the standard GM TBI intake pump and fab it onto the Toyota fuel pickup where the Toy pump was.

i think it'd be OK to run an external fuel pump with a carbed toyota tank. the tank doesn't care if the engine is EFI or carbed.

as for the cut off switch, if the 4.3 doesn't have something like it already, summit sells a fuel pump kill switch that plumbs into an oil pressure sender hole in the engine block, if the pressure goes to zero(engine goes off) it shuts the pump down.

Why would it burn the pump up? The fuel by-pass allows fuel to flow back to the tank. A high pressure pump worked fine for me (bosche).

I used a carb'd tank and inline pump. I didn't have any problems. I've seen indications that some EFI applications need baffled tanks to prevent problems at low fuel levels.

Would an inline pump like the walbro 255 supplie to much pressure or what kind of inline pump should you run. Also what size line would you run for this swap. I'm doing the same swap and have the same questions. THanks

This post of mine was 2+ years old! Damn.

To answer your question though... Yes. And even though I bought a factory TBI 12-15PSI internal pump and fabbed it to fit in the stock toyota tank, I have seen guys since that just use the Toy EFI fuel pump with the TBI chevys. Granted the stock Toy EFI is higher pressure but the regulator on the intake will flow unused fuel back to the tank no prob. (wish I would have known that prior to my build)!


EDIT- I changed my fuel lines to the 4.3 lines, (I think they were 3/8 instead of stock 1/4). And I went with the in tank fuel pump since it is way cheaper and should technically last longer than external, (heat damage).

Remember too that 4runner and p/u tanks are the same except different in shape only. The 4runner dips down in the front to allow for the back seats. So; 4runner will fit p/u but p/u will not fit 4runner. Don't ask how I know this one!

What about running an aftermarket gauge VDO, Autometer and so on.
I heard the toyota sender has something special about it?

I just install a 4.3 tbi in my 85yota. It had a 22re in it. i just ran the factory pump with the factory lines. No problems. One thing i did notice was the amount on air presure come out the vent hose from the tank so i restalled the charcoll tank. Because of the large amout of fuel presure been returned to the tank.And the pump is just a hot and a ground. No special setup for them.

And dont try to use a pump over 15 psi with a holley aftermark throttle body. They can not regulate over 15 psi. They well over fuel your motor. I know. Leard the hard way.
