So we are panning out the rig that is currently in my sig. Its a 80 LUV with a SBC, 5 tons, 49-54 inch tires (52 inch Michelins currently), Hemmet wheels, 5 tons with front and rear steering, 2.5" .500 lowers, 2" .250 uppers and a doubler. Unsprung weight 5000-6000 LBS. Sprung weight somewhere close to 2000-3000 LBS. Its a heavy pig.

This rig will primarily be a crawler no high speed stuff and maybe 1 day compete in a completion like havoc (don't know if I could ever get the time off work). saying all this the cheapest, most reliable option I've found has been the basic coil spring/ shock combo which I'm fine with. Obviously I'm not real sure on what kind of lift I will need (hopefully as low as I can get it with the chunk), but what springs should I be looking into that are have decent spring rates that won't get destroyed by all the unsprung weight. Also as far as shocks goes, which ones?

I was pretty much sold on going with a 2.5 air shock due to the low speed I'm running, but now I'm thinking the unsprung weight will just destroy the shock. I see quite a few "heavy" rigs competing in havoc with coil springs, so surely someone has a good recipe.

You'll need to run good limit chains/cables/straps.

What's under the rig doesn't really matter that much in spring choice...

You don't want 5 tons hanging from a shock eye...

1200 per front axle x2, 500 pounds per wheel and tire. So 4400 for axles, wheels and tires. Then add in link material, tabs, brackets, rams, etc and yes getting close to 3 tons. Here are some pics

You can see the chunk in the background next to the axle housing. that housing is a D44.

I found some specs online with the ZJ coils, anyone have any other input on them?
I have them under the front of my S10 Blazer. I went with BDS's 6" coils and the spring rate seems to be perfect for my application. Damn near neutral, which works my shocks pretty good but flexes well and very rides nice. My Blazer weights 5200 lbs total, but with a D44 and 35s on aluminum rims my unsprung weight is a lot less...

Anyways to find these I started looking at vehicles with a similar weight and went from there.
