Seemed like a few years ago everyone was dumping their Jeeps, Rock Buggies, sand rails, dirtbikes, and quads like crazy and getting a SxS. Myself, and many of my friends were also quick to jump on the SxS bandwagon.

Going to Pismo or Dumont a couple years ago, quads and rails had almost disappeared and RZRs were blasting around everywhere. Most quad-class races were cancelled. Going on Jeep runs started to consist of half of the group in SxSs. At a popular off-road event a few years back, the SxS runs were at max capacity and many of the Jeep/buggy runs had to be cancelled due to low participation. The new fast SxSs handled better than any Jeep/quad ever could, and they were more fun to customize.

But recently, this has seemed to drastically change. I know that sales of ALL new dirt toys have dropped in this economy, but it seems like SxSs are losing popularity and other forms of dirt motorsports are making a resurgence.

More than half the posts of SxS forums and FB pages are people desperately trying to sell their SxSs. Out in the dunes recently, quads were everywhere again and very few SxSs were seen (except for a couple RZRs on fire lol). Almost everyone in my off-road club has either sold their RZRs, can't afford to fix them, or they have been collecting dust in their garage for a year due to lack of interest.

Used quad prices seemed to have jumped by about 50% in the last year, with old Banshees seemingly doubling in value. I had 2 guys at Pismo in November ask me if I would sell my TRX450r (that has never happened). The same off-road event I mentioned above has less than half the SxS participation that it had 2 years ago and all of the Jeep/buggy runs are full. Hardly any SxSs are attending local runs anymore.

Moto seems to be making a HUGE come back too, as the local dealers are selling the crap out of dirtbikes and the trails are packed with them again.

What do you think the reason for this is?

Has the SxS industry priced itself out of the market?
Has reliability issues turned off consumers?
Is the popularity of sport SxSs just settling down to normal levels?
Have many people tried SxSs, and decided it wasn't for them?

I don't think the off-road community as a whole is shrinking because Pismo, Glammis, Rubicon Trail, off-road parks, and the major off-road events are experiencing very high attendance levels.

Hopefully a slowdown in popularity doesn't curtail further developments in the industry.

It's just like anything new. Tons of people go out and buy and there is a huge boom, and then it settles down to its "natural" level.

When the 450's came out in 04 banshee's all but disappeared from the dunes. By 07-08 1/3 of people that bought them had decided they didn't like riding atv's, 1/3 decided they liked the 2 strokes better and returned to their banshee's/250r's, and 1/3 decided they liked the 4 stroke and kept what ever they had.

The SxS will probably follow a similar arc. However the industry itself is still evolving so I don't think it will be as drastic an arc as the 4 stroke was.

In the sand it was very typical for people to move from atv's to rails as families grew. While the side by sides are expensive you still get a lot of bang for your buck, especially when buying used, and they can do things the rails can't especially in the NW with our not so wide open dune areas.

They also offer a cross over type vehicle. Some people can not afford to have a 4x4 rig for the woods and a sand rail for the sand. So they provide a vehicle that is far more capable than a jeep in the dunes and far more capable than a sand rail in the woods. In a package that, while expensive, is more affordable than owning a jeep/4x4 and a sand rail that fits the whole family.

It's like all things.

When a top shelf SxS was $12k it was pretty easy to bite.
Now a high end model is $25k. That's a pretty big jump in price.

I would like to upgrade to a new one, but no way. I would like a Jeep JK too, but at $40k I don't want one that bad.

The economy sucks and the market is pricing people out of it. Everyone loved it in the beginning because you could have the baddest one out there for not much more than a dirt bike. Now it's becoming another rich mans game.

I hope so, I wanna pick one up, cheap.
Good luck. Most used ones I see are from people asking almost as much as they payed.

All of this.

$250-300 a month payment on a toy? Pass. :shaking:

I suppose you are right, as I have noticed this too. Seems everyone is really upside down on what they owe on these things. Guys in my club financed theirs for 5 years and are making more than their car payment on it! Once in a while, someone who paid their RZR off will give a really good deal to get rid of it, but those don't last a day on the market.

The RZR groups on Facebook don't even discus runs and tech anymore, just thousands of people trying to dump their RZRs for what they owe.
