A 9" with 60 outers is a bastard axle?

That's what no one gets, the 9" would have cost $2400 for a standard 3rd and $3k for a load bolt 3rd. Sourcing a 14b and buying everything was going to be right at the same cost. So not a "fraction" of the cost, unless you consider 7/8s a fraction.

Obviously the difference would be if we can sell the axle to recoup some of the cost.

We ended up picking up a 14b with 90% of the stuff we were going to do for a decent price.

Never said the snowfighter was better, but it's there and everything but the housing and wheel hubs is new/upgraded. I'm a big fan of the 05+ SD stuff, but even I wouldn't sell the front just to start over with a stock axle. I'd say unless you went with the $5k big bell rcv's the king pin axle with ried knuckles and chromo shafts is a stronger set up.

So a 1/4" bigger ring gear is going to more than make up for the strength loss going to high pinion?
What are you putting into a 14bolt to cost $2400???:eek::eek:

Thought you were interested in high9 or whatever. Anyway it would be a cheap way to get a strong high pinion axle setup. The pinion is way stronger in the 10” gear set and it might just live in a rear axle setup.
It might, but we aren't interested in spending a bunch of time and money for a lateral move or slight upgrade, hence the 8" being scrapped.

$300 donor
$300 truss
$300 disc brake kit
$400 r&p
$500 locker
$400 master install (I can't believe how much these are)
$400 shave kit
$500 chromo shafts
$200 pinion flange
$100 wheel bearings, seals and studs
$200 gear set up

Those were all quick Google numbers and not searching around. I know I could do it cheaper if I did, but that's well over the price of just a ruffstuff housing and 9" 3rd. Which is the only reason I asked about the 9".

Like I said, we aren't just buying an old axle, welding the spiders and throwing it under there.

Damn, I think you were getting close to having folks start talking about the hypoid angles and tooth contact differences between the 9" and the D60. Probably could have came to a good conclusion, as to what point the 9" platform becomes stronger than a D60?:flipoff2:

Don’t forget pinion guard and heavy duty dif cover
I'm honestly not a huge fan of the Rock shovels. Especially since this will have a companion flange. But the pinion angle should be tipped up enough that it wouldn't be a big deal the housing we bought came with 1. The shave kit I am pricing includes a diff cover already welded to the shave kit.

OK, I'll bite, wtf is amboid cut?

I'm sure I'm missing a small, simple detail, but I've always wondered why they can't just cut gears "the other way" to run on the drive side in HP rear?
I cant figure it out either. With the commonality of 5 axis CNC machines and computer modeling, how hard can it be to program a set of gears to be cut opposite? Must not be that easy but in my mind it ain't all that hard either....:homer:

i really have no idea and theres not much info out there about it, heres a little snippet i came across

An Amboid bevel is similar to a hypoid bevel (i.e., provides a bigger axle ratio than a spiral bevel but has a relatively larger pinion than a spiral and therefore better strength). The difference is that the amboid is cut so the pinion meshes above the centreline of the crownwheel, while the hypoid pinion meshes below the CL.

Speaking of, where are all the cheap 2005+ super duty 60's now?
What's cheap? How many you want? Easiest place I know of is Santa Clara truck wreckers. Last I checked they were $650ish

Seems like CA is $500 if you get lucky, but more like $600-800. Idiots still list them for $1k-1200 because, emg it's a D60. Just like the people listing 94-03 dodge fronts for $800+

I've heard some people talk about getting them for $2-300 in other states though.
