ok Ive been searching for a few hours and have not found much so I am gonna post up.

My buddy has an XJ with a 4.0, AX15, 231 W/ sye, d60s and 37 krawlers

He bought a klune V and a eb dana 20 to put in, but when he found out how much a 32 spline out put was compared to a D300 He desided he wanted to sell the 20 and get a 300, but after a lot of looking we couldn't find any thing for a desent amount (plus the thought of the cost of HD out puts and flip kit) so we havnt really been looking

I have been tossing around the idea of a ford 205 with him be cause they are super cheap and super strong but are 1.96:1 and he wants to do a flat belly And I am not sure if that is possible with a 205 without cutting the floor

he was also thinking about putting the klune V in with the 231 then putting in a wide chain later on

so the other day we were looking at the klune v and were thinking of just throwing it in with the stock D20 but arent sure how it will hold up. Would it be worth it to put it in, carry a spare out put and up grade it later? Or would it just be a waste with the tire size(plus plans of 39 krawlers)? EDIT also with the 20 he would have to buy CV yokes F & R

any input would be helpfull thanks!

I only have experience with the 231 and the 300. Of those 2 I would go with the 300. I would sell the 20 and the 231/SYE and use the money towards a flipped 300. You can do some searching for vehicles to get CV shafts from. I got mine from the front of an XJ. Most can be had at pick n pulls for around $20. Get it cut down or lengthed depending on your need and rebuilt. Shouldnt run more than $150 a shaft if that.

It doesnt have to cost a lot to flip it. If you can fab then its pretty damn cheap.

If you have access to a cnc machine you can get files to make your own flip kit.

I went this route. I had a local guy make one up for me for around $200. I have the files that were used if your interested. There are also some in the link above. He altered mine a little from the ones we got off here.

Twin sticks can be made for cheap as well

You can also make some cable shifters work with a little fabbing.

And yet another with some pros/cons of the 300 and a word for the 205 as well.

Thanks for you overwlelming spilage of knowlage :shaking:

Obviously that is the best option but some people dont have endless wallets
Then why have it as an option in the poll? ;)

My opinion is, if you can't do it right because of lack of funds, wait until you can.

Yeah well another reason I was asking about the 205 was becuse I didn't think tha it would be a big deal to swap it out for a 300 down the line and would be a small loss ~$50(if he couldn't resell it)

The 231 with the wide chain, 6 gear planetary setup, and the 32 spline SYE has a higher input torque rating than the 300 or the 20. Frankly the 231, 20, and 300 are all too small imho behind a 4-1 crawl box. You will likely see a failure. The 205 should have the best time handling the stress, but they are huge. Unless you have significantly stretched your wheelbase the 231 is just too long. If it were me I would sell the klune, and all of his other transfercases, and purchase either a Stak, an atlas or a pimped out 300.

I'm not sure I'm understanding this. Your friend thought the 32 spline output was too much so he'd rather buy a D300 flip kit along with a HD output for it. Isn't that going to be more in the long run?

The D20 comes with CV yokes if I remember correctly. At least the 2 D20 cases I have in my garage do. If you aren't going to run CV shafts you can pick up some oddball ujoint straps that allow you to run a nonCV shaft. I don't remember the application they came from. I picked mine up from Jess@HighAngle.

Run the D20 and carry a spare output. He already has the parts on hand.

Well we also started hearing things about the D20 not being that strong so he was kinda fearing he might be polishing a turd

Do you have any proof to back any of this up?

The 205, The 2:1 would be fine behind a 4:1 klune.
No need to flip it like a 300, no need up grade the out put shafts like a d300 $$$ the 205 is the cheapest and the strongest and the gearing would be fine.

Will it fit? you can make it fit, I clocked mine behind a 203. my 203 is much taller then the klune but I still think you would need to cut the floor and make new seat brakets as I did to fit the 205.

You wouldent have to cut the whole tranny tunnel out like i did but you would need to where the seat brackets are:

Put the D20 in there and upgrade to the 300M or whatever super alloy stock replacement output shaft later when funds allow. No need to shorten the driveshaft that way like you do with the 32 spline stuff.

And carry a spare like it was said above

How much do you think it would hang down if we clocked it as much as possible without cutting?

EDIT
will a D300 or 20 fit flat without cutting?

203/205 combo... if you ask nicely I can tell you how to make it bolt to an aw4/ax15

you will need to 'modifly' the floor, but will have plenty of gear, and front dig, for little $

Thats cool and all but why would he want to do that when he already has the Klune V?

The klune V allone has slightly more gearing the the 203/205 combined????
