Hey all, 69 FJ40. running a big block...still building.

This is my 1st FJ, & I have the stock tank (that sits under pass seat). I am guessing that bobbing around in the woods, gets the thing smelling like fuel, so do you all just go fuel cell, or is there an easy, low profile tank that can sit under.

I am thinking a CRX tank, but instead of reinventing the wheel, I thought I would ask. it seems I have plenty of room (spring over & 4" chevy lift springs, tub stock frame mounts) as to not get hit by the diff, or really anything else.

I would like to go underside, as I will have 2 bucket seats (out of CRX acrually) in the back, & will not have much extra room for clothes, beer, food, beer, anything else, & well....beer LOL

so, what did y'all do with yer tanks?

i heard about this a couple of weeks ago and it seems to fit perfect for this application:

tank from a 94ish S-10. comes wit the sending unit and fuel pump (for a TBI engine) in it. pretty cheap and easy to find at pnp. holds 20 gallons and works great. fits perfect under the rig and right between the frame rails.

you could use an inline pressure regulator (don't run a cheap pos) to bring the pressure down from 18 to 7-8 psi if you're still carbed.

the stock tanks work pretty well also but they do hold a little less fuel.

"so, what did y'all do with yer tanks?"

Replace it with a brand new stock tank so I don't have to worry about it for the next 30 years. No fabbing required.

OTOH, my buddy Rob used to wheel a 396 that had some serious heat issues. He installed one of the rear aux tanks that are made for the LC as his fuel source [ offered by ConFerr, NWMP, FuelSafe.........Mark's Off Road:grinpimp: ] and had his stock front tank lined and made into a water tank. He then fabbed a drip mister in front of his radiator that could keep the rig cool for 300 miles even in the dead of summer.

Hth

I did the same thing with my automatic 86 yota with a coulple of widsheild washer nozzles, tank & washer pump. As with that automatic & high elevation, after 2 hours of almost constant WOT the stock cooling system just wouldn't keep up, but mist it for 10 sec or so & it would cool right back down. thanks for the list source for tanks :smokin:

misting system?!

you guys are killing me. why go thru all that effort and not just cure the problem instead? like running a good rad and a shroud along with a proper fan.

my best friend, big-block-bob runs a very healthy 454 in his cruiser (this thing shits and gits it big time) and it runs at 190 degs all day. he lives in CA as well so it's not like the ambient temp is helping him any. :smokin:

and he ain't runnin' no misting system!:flipoff2:

orangefj, I think you are kinda missing the point here. In my yota at 8-9000ft in elevation it has NO POWER AT ALL, so the foot is on the floor most of the time, & with low rpms. so it is not like we just romp on it here & there, it is all that poor little thing has, so it stands to reason that after an hour or 2 of that the stock cooling system just wont keep up. Yeah, I could spend some dough & swap to elect. fans, BUT hey, I just kyped some free stuff off of a junkyard car, & BAM a free & easy fix. I know it is not THE way to do it, but it works. & for the $500 I have in my 86 toya it is OK. The FJ I am building is a different story.

Hey just be glad we are not adding oil to the coolant like we do to our derby car ;)

(hopefully that got a laugh, picturing me pouring 30wt into my radiator):p
