So I have a move coming up and I have to figure out how to move towing my jeep behind the penske truck. Has anyone done this. My axles are at 80" for width. I'm not even sure how their trucks are equiped to haul trailers. I have to go and take a look at their setup

Option 1 Tow with a penske trailer jeep is 4400lbs with 37's

Option 2 Buy a 16" trailer and haul it behind the Penske truck.

Option 3. Drive from NY to Colorado with the jeep 37's 4.56's and a 3 speed auto. This will really suck.

Need some help and advice here guys. I would like to buy my tow rig but it isn't practical for gas for an everyday commute like the Audi.

Where at in Colorado?
I used Denver as a central location, just for estimation, and came up with 1550 miles, but that takes it through the socialist republic of shitbucket. (Canada)
To keep it in the states, you're looking at prolly 1625 miles, you can ship it for about 1500 bucks. It sounds like alot, but figure what fuel would cost you, and it suddenly becomes more reasonable.
What is your time frame? I may be able to assist.

I work at a Penske in Portland Oregon. Penske does not allow that large of a tire to be towed on their trailers. Don't tell them they are that big. What came stock might even be to large. I would lie and tell them you are towing a honda civic or something like that to save trouble. Just thought you might wanna know.

Have fun with that. I drove a 24' penske diesel 6 speed from wichita to oklahoma city with only a 400 lb horizontal stabilizer in it, and the thing was crying about doing 65 mph, and that was wound out, foot buried, on the flats. When I hit a hill it was instant 50-55 mph.

I have towed twice with a penske van- went with the 16ft because they usually have the hitch on the back. I towed my own trailer with the jeep on it. 16footer has the 6.0 vortec motor and gets the job done. Years ago when I moved from Durango to Orlando, I used a 20 footer and towed my trailer/jeep behind hit. That truck was sloooowwwwww and topped out at 60 mph. At least the smaller vans will go faster.

Don't tell them what you are towing. Either rent a trailer from them, or buy/borrow your own. Penske has the nicest trucks to rent and usually come out cheaper than U-junk or Ryder.

I have fit more than one yukon on a u-haul car hauler (all wheels off the ground) and despite the fact that is the equivilant of shoving ten pounds of shit in a five pound bag, it was very effective. Do it, don't drive the truck like its a stock car and you will be just fine.

micky
PS lie about what you are hauling, according to my paperwork I was hauling integras

Ya I figure if I told them what I would be hauling they would never let me get the truck. I figure the best thing to do would be to buy my own trailer....but what then about brakes I'm sure their isn't a 7 pin hookup.

Flat towing it with a bar is an option I could do that also. Again not sure about the hookup on back on the truck.

Does anyone know if they have a hitch or ball setup and what size? I know one of you said you work their?

with the larger van or truck, not having brakes functioning on the trailer is not to big of a deal. You could always temporarily wire a conroller up if need be, but just make sure to remove all traces once the truck is returned. When I towed, I did not worry about the brakes- I found the penske brakes to be sufficient. The electrical hookup on the back is just for lights since their trailers use surge brakes (which suck worse than no brakes, imho). The hitch ball is standard sized 2 inch. I did sneak into a rental yard and measured the height of the hitch ball and found that it was too high for my trailer so I installed an adjustable tongue on my trailer so that I could level it out.

Flat towing is out. It's just too dangerous. Spend the money on a trailer and once you get moved, do what I did and buy a tow vehicle here. I bought my '98 K2500 burb for $7k and it's fully loaded (leather, ect) . Tow rigs are cheap in CO.

I read what you posted earlier. I wouldn't dare tell them :flipoff2:
