I just installed a new water pump on the 304, and it is a 1/4" longer than the old one. This causes my pullys to not line up. Does anyone know how to fix this. I need help on this.

Thanks

assuming you haven't changed pulleys, then it's defective water pump.

Where did you buy it? Take it back and get another.

Check the online parts stores, some are pretty good at giving length info. Try different years, different options, with CARB, without CARB, with A/C, without A/C ... see which part numbers are the same, then go to the store and have them pull each different version using the year/model info you have in hand. Parts monkeys don't like playing games unless you know them well enough. Mine just wave me past the counter now.

AMC V8s only use one water pump that covers 290s to 401s from '66-'91. About the only thing that varied is whether the motor has a 3 groove or 2 groove crank and corresponding water pump pulley.

yep.. and somehow the waters pumps have different depths.. i have run into this problem before.. you need to take it back.. and take a tape measure with you.. i always check the depth.. after my problems...

I was hoping I didn't have to take it back. Oh well, I'll take it back and go try and find another one. I wonder how mad they'll be that it's painted now.

It sucks because these motors have been out of production long enough so that useable cores are getting scares. That opens the window for chinese made castings....and we know how accurate they are.

I have had better luck with Napa parts. Checker, Autozone, Pepboys all bring the suck.

I thought all the AMC water pumps were the same as well. However, I just redid a '73 360 and the water pump assembly changed in '72. I believe they will fit but the shaft dimensions, right water outlet etc are just a little different. Hopefully, you still have the old one to reference. I know it is a total pain to switch it out once you get it on. Good luck.

2nd the watch where you get them. Napa hasn't done me wrong, and neither has Loop Road (local store in Garner, NC). But when in a pinch and getting them from three blind mice/AA/AZ I get inferior stuff half the time.

key parts I've had issues with are starters, alternators, master cylinders (brake and clutch), and water pumps.

So far all the brake parts I've gotten have worked out, but anything that can be rebuilt and sold I will be careful where I get it.

Also double check the year they looked up with part numbers from another store. I've had AZ cross reference parts for a '87 258 with those of a 72. Seals didn't match, but the computer said they should all be the same. Everyone knows the Computer is ALWAYS right.:shaking:

this is correct, my '72 360 is a different legth than a '73, making it a real bitch to find even stock replacements let alone an aftermarket one. I'm going to switch mine over to a '73 soon to make finding replacement parts easier.

My old one was still good, so I put it back on until I can figure out what to do. I have a pully off of a 78 that I'm going to use for reference to see if I can make that work. Pep Boys could order the new one for the 72 if I wanted.

just press the hub to desired depth (it worked when i had the same prob).
Ya, that works until the flange slides off the shaft and put's the fan in your radiator :mad3:

Get the right length one ;)

Edit: You can get fan pulley shims to make up the difference if that's the direction you need to move the pulley.
