I installed new ARBs front and rear in my 73FJ40 with stock front and rear end (aside from longfields, etc) last summer and they have worked great. Now when going on snow runs in extreme cold the compressor is just running and the rear will not lock. I have read similar problems on other threads mostly on Tacomas. What I am looking is anyone that has experienced this in an FJ40 that might be able to shead some light. The leak does NOT appear to be at the point where the line goes in to the diff. If I pinch off the line in front of the diff the compressor stops indicating the problem must be in the diff. The front does not have the same problem. Thanks for any input.

I doubt weather has a factor here unless you think water is getting in the line and freezing. Doubtful to see in California. I took my front apart after it having intermittent working issues. I found a small piece of steel in the groove with the sliding seal. Works fine ever since I took that out.

If you can hear air in the diff breather line when it is engaged, it is leaking internally. A seal kit can be had from ARB. I have heard of them going from free to retail in price so I guess it depends on hpw good a story teller you are.

Thanks for the input. Problem is definitely temperature related. Last weekend when I got to the snow after the drive up it worked for a while. I then got stuck in snow over the axles and after getting pulled out they were not working. I then drove for about 20 minutes and they started back up. When I got home in Tahoe that evening they were working. The vehicle parked overnight in 10 degree weather and the next morning the compressor just pumped. I drove about 30 minutes and they were working after the diff apparently warmed up. They were fine all week in Sac which is much warmer. Back to Tahoe last night and this morning they will not work.

Any other thoughts appreciated.

hmmm, how long have the lockers been in there. any chance the orings are shrinking enough when cold to let the air by? once they warm up/soften up they then create a better seal.......?!

just a though. it's something i used to run into in the transmission industry. sometimes anautomatic trans would have problems when the unit was cold but as it warmed up it owould start working better. the increased temp would make the lip seals swell up and soften up just enough to re-create a good seal.

is there moisture in the lines?

Thanks guys.

It does not appear to be water in the lines. If I pinch of the line just in front of the rear diff the compressor stops indicating the leak is in the rear end. I put soapy water at the point the line goes in to the diff and no apparent leak. Seams it must be an internal seal affected by cold.

The ARB was installed in June 07 so it is relatively new.

Some guys I know that have fairly new ARB's seem to have some issues on snow runs. The ARB's work fine but the compressor does cycle when its cold and the air is coming out the breather but not all the time. They do not leak other than when its very cold. I would try running a different oil in the diffs. To me it seems to only effect the newer lockers. That being said I have had my ARB's in my Cruiser since 97 and have never had a problem.

I thought so too until I took my rear cover off to replace the gasket. The center pin came out in three pieces. The dang thing was still running and I had no idea.:homer:
