I have the opportunity to aquire a gm 11.5 from a '01-'03 duramax SRW 4x4. It had the driver's side hub bearing lock up, the mechanic pulled the driver's side apart, obviously let it sit in the weather, and it looks pretty rusty. Probably needs new drivers side rotor and hub assembly and axle shaft at first glance. The mech. claimed it was a d60 but after researching I was able to determine what it is. I also noticed the lack of lockers available (arb especially) just wanted to know if it is worth messing with. BTW newb here, and I did search so flame away.:flipoff2: Any help is appreciated. Intended use is for 1980 cj-5 crawler project. Plans are to extend wheel base, link front and rear w/ fox 2.5s, and 38.5-40 rubbers.

considering the amount of 10.5 FFs out there in good condition I would not mess with that one. not only does the chunk hang down more, but its not worth it to spend extra money on a new hub/shaft for it

Even if the price that I could get it for would make up for the expense of repair, would ground clearance deter you from using one?

It's an awesomly strong axle, with great brakes.

However, it has some drawbacks - lack of lockers, heavy, hangs down.

IF you;re going to run 42" tires +, and it has the gears you want to run in it, and you don;t mind welding it up, and you can get it fo a good price - then yes.

If not, think carefully (depending on price)

That is a massive axle man, nearly the same axle as in my dodge. With my stock tires, it looks like I could drag on a football!.

As stated above, very poor ground clearance for even a 40" tire. Go get u a junk yard 10.5 inch 14 bolt for cheap.

The Mech. mentioned he thought it had posi-trac.... I may see if I can just low ball him enough to make it worth my time... He has no money in it and it in his way.

I have a few other leads... But I am afraid that they want too much for them. I have a Model 20, hp d44, and 9" rear from a ford lying around. I am thinking I may be able to work out a partial trade for a 14b. Maybe use the 9" for a Hybrid 609 front.

come out here, i think there is about 24-36 in my local yard, [130+ collectivly from all my regular yards] $130 out the door.

i had that same problem in kansas, i had to hunt one down [emergency brakedown] fawken dick head scraper wanted $450:eek: i was in a bad spot but not fawking stupid.
$h!t that trip to Cali or shipping from Cali would break the bank. Scrap yards around here are pretty bad. But I got this one from a guy at work who does body work on the side and already offered to help and access to any tools he has... So in the long run it might work out.

damn, should have called me, I have never gotten over $150 for one

the lack of snow and inspections keep the trucks on the road a lot longer in the south. 14 bolts are hard as hell to find allways have been. we pay more for one axle shaft than you west coast guys pay for an entire unit.
i used to see them go for $1000 all the time around memfrica. construction companies dont have a problem dropping a grand to keep an old truck in service when the other option is closing up shop or the pretty wife giving up her Benz..

now those ford sterling rears are just about free. pretty much just as beefy too....
