I know this question has been thrown around a lot, and i have searched some so i just need a little advice. If i would like to drive my truck on the street at all over 50mph with rockwells the obvious best is disks. I also want to run 49" michs with stock rock wheels. i dont want it to wide so with stock rock wheels which is the best way to run them with the hubs turned out out and the wheels in or the hubs in and wheels out. I know some of u guys dont like USA6X6 but their diy 1 ton disk brake kit seems cheap. is this a good product. Also they say that their pinion brake is the best is this true? trying to get out as cheap as i can.

You have got to be kidding me!
Yeah USA 6x6 is great and they would never lie or deceive you in anyway.
All the people on here that tell you how they suck are just telling lies that they made up for fun. So call up daniel and send him your money cause he makes the best stuff.

You and Darwin will be friends. brakes are over-rated. go real cheap, dont buy any!!

You clearly didnt search enough. disc brakes are the best way to go for many reasons. pinion brakes will work but if any component fails, you and whatever or whoever is in your way is fucked.

A little advice - Dont go cheap on brakes or steering, as these 2 items are the most important items in any vehicle. It's not how fast you go thats important. If you cant stop or steer, going fast just means you get hurt or die quicker.

for Rocks use Randy Ouverson(WWW.OUVERSONENGINEERING.COM) or Steve Gerstner(www.differentialeng.com). Both of these guys build quality products and have little to no negative feedback from anyone on any board. Try yahoo or google search under their names, now try that with USA6X6. There is a difference.

build your own....theres rotors out there that require absolutely no machine work to use.....or use the b700 rotors and 550 calipers, there is great threads on this topic, you just have to read them!

I run the exact wheel and tire combo you are wanting to run. You cannot run wheel brakes with the hubs in, there just isn't a rotor that exists to permit it. You can check out the write up I have in my signature regarding brakes, and you should search for studlybilly.

thanks for the info it looks like the best way to go is build my own setup simular
to drivetime.

Drivetime did a good job of putting it together. That setup is similar to Steve Gerstner's at Differential Engineering. Drivetime actually worked with Steve when he was putting his setup together. there is a thread here on that brake build. good choice to run discs at the wheels and scrap the idea of pinion brakes.

If you have the money, definitely go with steve gerstner's kit. I am still in college, so I had to go another route. Luckily studlybilly and Steve helped me out big time.

thats some bad ass products but 1300.00 for just the front OUCH.
Then go with Randy's (OEM) pinion setup. It is probably the most expensive pinion setup, but his is designed and built with pinion braking in mind. These when coupled with the correct master cylinder(s), can give brakes that aren't just an on/off switch. Search for Dibble's build thread/ write ups if you want further input. Are they as good as wheel brakes? NO! but the if you only intend to go about 50 or so every so often, then they may not be a bad deal. Just my $.02 worth.

You should give John at http://www.jatonkam35s.com/ a ring he has alot of knowledge in the area you guys are looking into. Including lockout hubs, pinion brakes and much more for Rockwells. If you are a east coast guy this maybe a solution for you!

Thanks for all the info guys, i just like to drive to the local trails about 25 miles with the speed limit hits 60 for about 15 miles. I might go with a pinion set up for a while and piece together a wheel brake set up and do it myself.

I drove my truck every day for a little over a year with a single pinion brake out back. Pinion brakes front and rear were too much on the street, but the single brake out back was worked fairly hard. It never failed on me, but I didn't feel comfortable with it setup like that.

My advice is to at least do the wheel brakes up front. I have that and a pinion brake out back still and it works well, even on the 50 or so mile trip through the Ozark Mountains I make going between camous and my grandparents' house. If cost is a concern, go with the DIY route up front and save up til you can do the rear later.

If you're going to run the bigger tires & wheels, the 1-ton setup isn't enough.

I'm running that kit up front with A-compound pads (tons of friction, but produces shit-tons of brake dust and eats the hell out of the wilwood rotors) and a pinion brake out back, and it works well, but ONLY because I'm using a lightweight wheel & tire setup at <150lbs per corner, with 42" IROK's.
