Just changed out the diff fluid in the front and rear axles on my truck and while the front was easy, having both fill and drain plugs, but the rear is a PITFA. I had to remove the sensor on the top of the diff and use a vampire pump to get the fluid out. It was the same on an F-250 axle. Are all new rear axles sans drain plugs?

yep they are lacking drain plugs considering that 90% of the population does not change diff fluid it would be another potential point to leak leading to greater failure. They just plan on you pulling the diff cover.

Why'd you pull the VSS, there's a fill plug on there that would have worked just as easily for your pump.

Couldn't get the hose in through the fill plug.

I know most people will never change their diff fluid, but why put a drain plug in the front axle and not the rear? Though I'm glad it's there. I have to do the same maintenance on the wife's expedition soon. Plus the transfer case in my truck.

On our street, dezert and tow rigs, I remove the oe cover throw away and replace with a ORU cover with drain plug. (As they are aluminum, I would not do this on a rockcrawler.) Works well, looks good and has a drain plug. Warning the 8.8 holds a bunch of fluid with one on.

If you are extremely wealthy there are mag-hytech diff covers, but I have never seen the need for them at the price they charge.

If I was rich, I certainly am not after purchasing 3 quarts of Mobil1 75W-140 @ $15 each.

No need to pull the cover, though that was my next option. The diffs are on stock trucks that rarely see any off roading or towing.

I did notice that it was leaking by the pinion gear. The housing was darker (no visible liquid) from the yoke back towards the center section.

You can buy one of my diff covers w/ and integrated drain machined into it.......
I'm sure it's a great diff cover, but I don't think it's necessary for my application. In another 123,XXX miles I'll replace the truck instead of the diff fluid. The Expy OTOH...

Me thinks you are too lazy to pull the cover:flipoff2:

Hopefully my 8.8 shouldn't be in there too much longer.

Pony Driver should have a 8.8 front, but if he has a 8.8 rear then he should have a 4.6L, I thought the 5.4 came with a 9.25 or so?

By the way a tin foil diff cover would work the best for you!:flipoff2:

Go find an IRS exploder in the boneyard.. their rear covers are cheap and fit the need once you lob the mounting ears off.
