Looking at a silverado with a 6.0, really wanted the 5.3 but found this one for a good deal. How much worse gas milage does the 6.0 get and how reliable is it in comparison to the 5.3.
Not really that much worse. The extra power more than makes up for it. You will see 15mpg in mixed driving 18-20 hwy. Guess its a 1/2 ton?

They are the same motor save for the 6.0L has a 4.00'' bore.

Plus it will have more lowend.

6.0 will get 14-15 highway and 10-12 city. 5.3 will be about 3 or 4 mpg better but will have less low end.

My '03 2500HD crewcab/shortbed, auto, 4.10 gears and my dad's '02 2500HD extended/short, auto, 4.10 trucks always got around 15 mpg during mixed driving with a bias towards highways. My dad also had two previous 1500 5.3 trucks (both extended cab/shortbed, autos, one 3.73 and the other 4.10). They maybe got 1 mpg better, definitely not 3-4 mpg (that's like 30+%).

My previous truck was an '01 Dodge 1500 extended/short, 5.9 gas, auto, 4.10 gears (the Off-Road package) it only got 11-12 mpg consistently so I was pretty happy the Chevy got noticably better and was more powerful (seat of pants, not just on paper).

My 2500HD with a 6.0, 4.10's, and 245/75's gets 16 running empty with the cruise set at 75 & 2,500 RPM's (a 1500 will be geared MUCH higher, even with 4.10's due to the different transmission). I get 11-13 "in town" (got just over 14 on my most recent tank by REALLY babying it) and 10-11 towing on the highway.

You don't have to drive 75 or 80! If you can handle driving 60-65 the mileage will go way up!

These truck especially the 1/2 tons will get decent mileage 18+! But driving them 75+ will kill the mileage. My 99 1/2 ton would see 20+ if I stayed out of it and drove 65-70 with all hwy miles.

The key is the driver not the truck. I learned not to get in a hurry and set the cruise. It saves alot of money in fuel.

I'v driven and worked on alot of these rigs...good trucks. If mileage isnt a huge concern go ahead and get the 6.0 in a 2500hd. Good truck sans ifs. The 6.0 doesnt have quite the same bottom end as the older vortec 350, but has better mid and top and makes a bit more power overall and gets similar mileage.

I got a 04 1500 with the 4.8..just a lil 4x4 longbed with 265 mt's and a flowmaster and tune. Averages around 20mpg if im not having too much fun. The 4.8 doesnt have the power of the 5.3 let alone the 6.0 but in a light truck that doesnt see heavy weight often it does just fine and is plenty strong.

Driving like you have an egg under your foot helps tremendously. That said, I have no data from running empty other than what I mentioned ;)

I CAN tell you that I've done as well as 11.6 towing my mud racer & as poorly as 9.5 on the exact same route. The difference was entirely in how hard I drove it. Top speed has a LITTLE to do with it, but trying to maintain speed (or not) on hills has a BIG impact.
