So say I have a shit load of black paint to spray , not a car , just the trailer and my roll cage..I just want to shoot it black and go on , nothin special..

question is which one will cost me more
a case of spray paint @ $4.50 a can..
or the paint for the paint gun, and a HF gun

If you use a small compressor and inexpensive sprag gun (HF) make sure you get an inline trap to purge the water out of the line. Seriously your little compressor will put out a lot of water (especially in the midwest here where it's high umidity) that will make it impossible to paint unless you do this. If you get agood trap the inexpensive gun will do well for this. It's a lot cheaper than rattle cans.

I bought a gal of black from napa with hardener and some xylol and it was like $115 bucks. I already have a spray gun and compressor so didn't need that. What kind of spray paint is it for $4.50 a can? I'd probably just buy some cheap walmart black paint @ $.99 a can and get a little spray trigger to go with it and call it good. my $.02

home depot had some black paint, it was under a buck a can. but this was like 4 years ago. 96 cents i think it was. painted just as good as the 5 dollar a can stuff

The best paint job I've ever had on my trailer was good old rustoleum in the can. Used a small roller and let it dry for a week. (oil based, non aerosol can) Flowed out like a paint gun and holds up to the AZ sun:beer:

no it dosnt. i have used that stuff, it fades in less than 4-5months. it also wicks in water. i can tell this because it looks real glossy when wet. i have duplicolor on my car right now, it hasnt faded in a year, looks a hell of alot better and water beads and rolls off it.
get rustoleum in a paint can and brush it on. it smoothes out and you cant see the brush marks. i did my beadlocks in the fashion, im looking at them right now and cant see a brush mark any where.

Not true. I'm in Ohio, I have a cheap 3hp HF compressor with an extra 10 gallon tank, a cheap HF spray gun, and I've succesfully sprayed a tractor with some tractor supply JD green and a bottle of hardner. No drier or anything. Turned out really good. Never had any problems with water in the paint. Not a professional job, but looked much better than rattle can. Probably could have made it look even better if I wet sanded it and buffed it, but I sold it shortly after painting it, and the guy who bought it thought it was a professional paint job.

The hardner was key. Without it, the paint was dull. I painted the backside of all the panels without the hardner, and the frontsides with. You could see a big difference.

Too much work doing too many coats for a trailer.

I would spray bomb it semi-gloss Rustoleum stops rust.

Light coat, wait 10 minutes, give it a thick coat, call it good.

I painted my car using the roller method and it came out good.

I have done some pieces with the spray bomb and some came out very very good.

But I do not know how much metal is being painted on this trailer.

Powed Coat the WHOLE CAR! Just playin....Im a rattle canner myself and have experiment with all types. For 96 cents you cant beat the cheap stuff. If it fades or cracks or peels then its another whole 96 cents to touch it up.

Im a big fan of the rustoleum though. Provides a great finish and resists a lot better than others. Also, I have been using Fusion in a can and if you clean your surface well that stuff is pretty kick ass too.

yeah it does fade but it sticks and lasts pretty long. i pained a "mudder" that i used to have so it was always coverdd in mud and dirt anyways. but it held up for the 3 years
