Can anyone tell me how to tell if a box and set of gears is for the driver or passenger side? I'm looking at 4 and can't tell the difference.

I'm pretty sure he's been running 404's on his crawler

The upper gear should be driving into the center of the axle while in forward gears. If its the other way, any back lash and bearing wear will constantly pound the outer case until it fractures.

Bomber is right! I am running 404's
I have 4 boxes apart and they are all the same gears - either lefts or rights. I will see which way they are driving and know now.
I think that this is weird that they are all the same since they came on different axles that were completely assembled. I've seen a lot of things and wouldn't put it past both axles having one of the boxes replaced with the wrong set of gears??? But it sure seems funny to me. I'll see if I can post a pick up tomorrow... well today now! Too many late nights!

Expedition imports has always had good prices on both gear sets and complete portal boxes. He might give you credit for your boxes if they are in good shape.

I've been getting alot of stuff from them lately. They do a pretty good job! Waiting on some steering knuckles and he sent brand new parts to make them up until the shipment comes to complete the order - Great service!!! My stuff always comes next day - bene of being in Cal.
