Hello everyone,
I'm new as of today and am not sure if I'm posting this message on the right site but here it goes anyways.
I saw a 1968 Unimog404 standard troop carrier for sale locally and the truck looks to be in a really good shape. All the mechanicals appear to be stock. The owner however claims that the engine is a 2.4 Liter (huh? I thought they were all 2.2's), so I guess my first question would be could anyone clarify this for me since I'm a novice at this?

My second question about this particular 404 which is a troop carrier is that it will actually only do about 55km/h wide open on a flat road. Why is it that it will not go faster when the 404's were all supposed to do around 80km/h top speed???

The serial # for this Unimog is: 404.114-050366 I hope that this will help.

I'm not sure on how to retrieve potential answers from fellow members off of this website so I'll just leave my email on here. I wanted to post some pics of this Unimog but don't know how...

Thanks to everyone who might want to help me with these questions.

A properly tuned good running 404 should have NO PROBLEM pulling 80km on the level. Should be closer to 95km if really running good with radials, etc.

More than likely it is a degraded fuel system and or ignition system. Barring those, make sure you don't have a brake dragging. Not uncommon for trucks that have been sitting as the brake hoses can swell on the inside.

If you are serious, you should perform a valve adjust and compression test. In that order. With the M180, doing the compression test without first doing a valve adjust is pointless.

Cheers,

Scott

I am not much of an engine guy but if memory serves you can swap the head off of a 2.4 onto that block... or something like that. Anyhow it is possible that someone has frankenstiened that motor and botched the job. But I think Jim is probably right about bad points or crummy carb. When I got mine I rebuilt the carb and it still ran terrible until I burned through all the last of the gas I couldn't siphon out of the tank (which took longer than expected). Is this also possibly a case of incorrect units; because 55 Mph on a flat level road is about a reasonable max for one of these trucks but 55 Kph seems WAY low.
