Currently driving a 2010 tundra, after a short tow with an empty trailer I saw my gas mileage drop dramatically, so getting a diesel seems really practical right now. I want to know whose got a 2010 cummins (preferably 2500) and what you think of it.
This would be my first diesel, so I don't know much about them, I'm wondering What kind of gas mileage are you getting? What problems have you had with them? I've looked at a few other reviews but I figured I'd ask here too
I haven't weighed my trailer with my project truck on it, but I'm assuming it's real close to 10k, I'm in the navy about to drive across country towing it so I can use the savings on gas. I love my tundra, it drives great, but realistically thinking about it, I'm thinking I'm going to need a diesel

If you put the same post in enough locations on this site you might just find that mythical 40mpg Cummings that you mentioned in the other thread.

I just bought a '15 Ram Cummins 4x4 6 speed manual a couple months ago. It's getting 16-17 pretty consistently to and from work/running around. It knocks down a solid 17 with the cruise set on 80 mph empty, but will do over 18 at 70 mph. I added a 2.5 gal jug of DEF at 3,600 miles, the gauge was at 1/4 and I have no way of knowing how full it was when it left the dealer aside from the gauge saying it was basically full (2.5 gal brought it back to basically full). I'm happy with it, good power, good economy, overall a nice truck. I don't have any personal experience with the pre-DEF trucks, but my friend had the same truck as me but in a '12 3500 single wheel (no DEF). He told me his best hiway miles were more like 14-15. That being the case, I think the DEF trucks are the way to go if you're leaving it stock.

I don't know how many miles you tow or drive but to justify the expense of a diesel you better be doing a lot. Maintenance is more than double, insurance higher, purchase price higher. These things add up. The mileage costs don't add up unless you are driving (specifically towing) a lot. I have owned several tow rigs both gas and diesel. Sure the power of a diesel is nice but it isn't cheap and most people that buy them do not get their moneys worth out of them.

Tow 10,000 miles a year at 7 mpg for $2.11 a gallon of gas = $3014.28
0r 10,000 miles a year at 14 mpg at $2.29 a gallon diesel = $1635.71
Your savings is only $1378.28

I bet you don't tow 10K a year. Insurance and maintenance will eat most of that 1378 up and that is if nothing breaks on the diesel.

But the power part of it is what everyone likes. Its not smart money, its fun money. Just like your trail rig. It's fun and you will never get out of it what you put in. I liked being able to pull my rig/trailer to Moab and back at 75mph at 11mpg overall and maintain 70+ over the mountains too.

counterpoint....

Diesel is cheaper than gas (for now)
Diesel trucks resale is much higher than gas trucks
Fuel economy is better
Lots more towing mojo
Don't be a rolling coal tuner douchebag

But those early 6.7s had EGR issues. From what I've read they are better off under load. If you DD them unloaded the EGRs clog up with carbon.

I'll keep my '07 5.9 for a long time.

I love my 04.5 HO cumming with 6 speed. It's been the best for fuel mileage out of all the cummins I've had. I've had them all lol. But keep coming back to old faithful.
Exhaust, intake no programmer will consistantly give me 21 mpg all day long. If I keep her at 65 with cruise control it will peak at about 23.5-24 empty. Most of my miles are towing. I'll get 17-19 depending on my right foot.
If I keep her at 55-60 fuel mileage gets better.

This truck has been my best truck for fuel mileage even compared to newer 6 speed manuals.

If you want the best fuel mileage go manual trans. Automatics suck and get expensive to fix. I've sold all my auto cummins. Now I have 2 manual trans cummins sitting in the driveway.
