Apimpdad's 95 Tacoma SAS & Buildup

Finally picked up a new project after selling my Tundra over 2 years ago. I was looking for a truck for quite some time, but I couldn't bring myself to pay the $5k+ asking price of the beat to shit 4 cylinder Toyota pickups locally. I ended up buying a 1995 Tacoma 3.4, 5 speed, 4x4 Regular Cab off of a buddy who had sank and hydro-locked the motor for $1k. After a salvage yard motor swap, new clutch/flywheel/misc. other parts to get this thing running and road worthy, I had about $3400 into it total. Now the fun stuff starts...

1995 Tacoma Regular Cab 240k miles on truck
1998 motor with 138k miles, timing belt changed at 109k
R150F 5 speed transmission with new clutch, flywheel, misc. seals
manual shift chain drive transfer case

Plans are:
Dana 44 front (completed)
Stock rear axle
front suspension will be 3-link with coils
rear suspension will be Chevy 63's w/ add-a-lead if needed
Toyota steering box with hydro assist
probably 4.88 gears, detroits front and rear
35" tire
Tube bed with bobbed/cut bedsides (done
Front bumper w/winch
Sliders (done)
possible interior cage... one day

Main use is for trails, camping adventures, hunting rig, and of course the wonderful Florida mud :flipoff2:

I'm leaning toward it

Could run a forward swing F150 box or FJ80 box and not have to fuck with hydro assist. Defiantly link it's if an option. You're more than likely going to have to run a different rear setup than stock leafs with an aal unless you like the bro truck look or keep the front stupid low.
Definitely considered the F150 box, this is still doable as well... it depends on what I can come across for a decent price. And I hear ya on the rear leafs... I plan on keeping the front as low as possible but if these 05+ leafs wont work, I will just do a Chevy 63" spring.

My buddy Walker came over and hacked up the bedsides and got them to fit pretty good. I added a little bit of tube work to the cage as well. It is coming together pretty good.

Didn't touch the truck this weekend, decided to take it off and catch up on some rest. I did do the passenger side valve cover gasket on Friday and will probably do the driver side next weekend. The bedsides are done for the most part though, I think they turned out pretty good.

Got 2 more tubes added, tool box mounted, rear crossmember/receiver, and the bed sides are on for good now. Still deciding on how I am doing the bed floor, tailgate, and bumper with wrap-arounds for the cut fenders.

If you want to make the bedfloor pretty easy and cheap... You can always do a piece of 3/4" plywood. Easy to attach things to and easy to change if you don't like it.
That doesn't look near as bad as I imagined, because I thought about plywood. I've got some ideas that would use sheet metal that I think I can make work. I'm trying to design it to fit 2 of those "action packer" storage bins, a jerry can, and a full size spare too. Things will be tight.

Got the tail gate built and now just waiting on the latch to come in and that will be done, also have to clean up the wiring for the lights. Also got the front axle cleaned up with a wire wheel. The bed floor and rear bumper will be next in line. I plan on doing some real damage to my bank account on cyber monday so that will kick start the axle and parts gathering for the front suspension.

One step ahead of ya, I got all of my heims during their halloween sale :D

I did however order the following from Ruffstuff today:
Reid Heavy Duty 4 stud passenger side knuckle
2 long clevis mounts
2 48" sticks of 2"x.250" DOM for my lower links

And from Summit Racing:
upper and lower ball joints
Warn premium hubs
Timken inner axle seals

I get paid again Friday, so more will be ordered

Edit: Guess I also forgot to mention in the thread that I also bought a Detroit for the front axle used off of member "06 H3" with only 250 miles on it.

Haven't gotten a lot done lately, but have been ordering more and more parts. I ordered a Chassis Unlimited steering arm and stud kit with their cyber Monday discount and also ordered some shift knobs and a Dana 44 to Toyota pinion flange. Picked up some cheap steel wheels a couple weeks ago as well.

The bed floor frame is about 85% done and I picked up some 11 gauge sheet for that. Hopefully I will have that knocked out by next weekend.

Bed floor, tie down hooks, and jerry can holder are complete. I also got the vinyl floor put in as soon as it arrived. Waiting on a used factory shift boot to come in to complete the floor.

Still waiting on my Low Range Off-road order and I also ordered some new corner lights for the front to get rid of the water filled black ones. Also ordered all my steering links and TRE's from RuffStuff on one of their "12 days of Christmas" sale.

Front axle is ready for the gear/locker install. Got my 4.88's, master install kit, Dana 44 to Toyota pinion flange, and the detroit locker all waiting to go in. Then the axle can slowly start going back together.

I also finally got a stock air intake back on it with a half-assed intake tube. it works though and don't have much money tied up into it.

The truck is currently down because of a bad tire so it will be sitting until I can find a nice used replacement. Not buying a new tire when I will be buying 4 brand new 35's in the near future.

Got the rear "bumper" wrap-arounds welded up. This is probably all that the back bumper is going to consist of. I couldn't think of any other ideas of what to do.

Build is slowing down even more as I am finally buying a house, but that means more space for tools and building shit. Should be all moved in by the middle of February so until then there will be no or very minor updates, like this one :flipoff2:

The original door panels were submerged in water for some time by the previous owner when he sank it so I have been running without them. I came across a guy who did something like this, which gave me the idea to do it.

I ordered some eighth inch black ABS plastic sheet off of ebay and traced the old door panels and cut them out with all the necessary holes. I re-attached all the plastic parts and threw them back on. Nice, simple, and clean finish that will be no problem to clean if they ever get wet or dirty again, which I'm sure will happen.

I moved at the beginning of February so I have been slammed with getting the house the way I want it... painting, floors, clearing out the land, all that on top of working way too much. I dropped the axle off to get re-geared and the locker installed.... over a month ago. It's the same guy that did my 60 on my Tundra, but he said he either lost or someone stole some of his tools he needs to set the gears and that they are expensive. I wasn't too concerned because I have been busy anyway, but now I am getting antsy to get it back. I haven't heard from him in a couple weeks. I also haven't gotten the necessary power ran in the garage for the welder and plasma.

SOOO with that being said, the build is on hold for at least another month or so. I'd love to make it up there Matt but I will have to see how far along the truck is at that time, but with how slow progress has been... it's not looking good :flipoff2:
