Cutting down wiring harness

Sorry if this should be moved to the Electrical Section, but it is in regards to an XJ so wanted to check here.

I am talking to a guy about cutting down a wiring harness for my 1997 XJ buggy.

But, he normally does OBD1 harness', cuts them down to;
fuel pump, keyed, ground, 12v, etc, bare minimum

anyway I told him I have a '97, and we both questioned whether the older harness would work with the newer engine. Or how different the newer harness would be to cut down to accomplish the same thing.

So does anyone know if the basic engine sensors, etc would match up between the older & the 97?

What are the major differences? Does this sound at all feasible?

Am I completely out to lunch with this idea?

thanks for any and all help.

I posted the same question there (naxja)... not getting much progress there either.
I'm not sure why this was moved either... to electrical maybe, but hey who am I to questions the powers at work here.

There are not a whole lot of wires that you can just remove from under the hood. But I guess it depends on what you consider to be the bare minimum.

I cut down a 96 XJ harness not to long ago for a swap, but only wanted to remove a few things that I knew I would not use.

I removed all the cruse, ac, aux fan, and a few odds and ends like under hood lamp.
ya, I have pretty much done this inside the vehicle, will have to try the same under the hood later. headlights/signals harness is gone but that was just from the plugs forward, will go further in time I guess.

thanks

spend the $30 at local parts store on an alldata disk for your chosen year, this way you have a solid wiring schematic. Cut out anything you wont use, ac, abs, radio, air bags, interior lighting, cruise, etc. I cant think of specifics at the moment but you will obviously need things to keep obd2 happy, im not sure on the xj but some other obd2 setups run the harness through the instrument cluster and have to keep the cluster or go with aftermarket harne$$$$.

Start it up, unplug something. If it still runs you dont need it! Continue untill you have met the goal of a skimpy harness.

... or go to AllDataDIY.Com and buy a year subscription for both your vehicle and the donor. I didn't even think of clipping wires/connectors off until I knew exactly what they were and where they went on the donor.
