EFI retrofits on old 4-cylinders engines?

Hi guys. New to the forum but seeking advice. I hope this query is landing in the right spot.

I'm looking for a new project to keep me busy and i'm all but sold on a mid-1970s Land Rover Series III. I hear they're quite rare in the US, but here in Australia every second farm has one rusting away in a forgotten corner. There's still plenty of neat ones too.

Standard issue in these 4x4's is a 2.25-litre 4-cyl Land Rover engine. Underpowered? Yes, but it's bulletproof and matches the rest of the running gear like a glove. I've investigated scrapping the original running gear for a more modern alternative - basically anything will fit (with encouragement), but you'd want to have a massive budget and fully-stocked toolshed to pull it off. Maybe in a few more years when i'm more familiar with the car.

One immediate improvement I would like to make is the installation of EFI. Without question the carby has to go. There's plenty of aftermarket bolt-on EFI TBI systems out there, but they're all designed for big-cube engines. I'm not sure if they could be adapted or detuned to suit use with a 4-cylinder engine, but a 4-bbl 500+cfm EFI carby on a two-and-a-bit litre engine seems a gross mismatch.

Is anybody savvy with installing aftermarket/DIY EFI systems on a 4-cylinder engine? I'm wondering if I can retrofit a TBI system off an early 90s 4-cyl car, but what options exist? Ultimately mega HP gains aren't my goal, but I do want the MPG gains and linear response characteristics/ offroad reliability of EFI.

Can anybody throw me a bone? Any info or advice would be much appreciated.

I ran Holley 2 barrel Pro-jection set-up on a 22R. It worked, but it was never perfect. Probably due to the quality of the computer at the time. This was first gen stuff about 15 years ago.

You may want to look into pirating a FI set-up of a larger streetbike. Should be plenty of crashed donors around to choose from.........

I am a fan of Megasquirt for DIY EFI. It is far from plug and play for an old land cruiser, but it is expandable to do whatever you want. The system I am building is for a V8. Down side is I am building my own wiring harness, but they have complete programmable waterproof ECU's. Ignition and air fuel ratio programmable by laptop.
