got a front 3rd off an 89 tracker today,, it's got 4.87 gears( 39/8 ) , 22 spline. going back thursday to get the front diff from an 94 tracker auto 2 door. my questions: aaghhemm( short pause )
1. think my chances are good that it will be an 4.87.
2. will the entire 3 rd member fit in the 88 sami housing, or will i need to swap the gears in sami 3rd member.
3. are the splines different front and rear on the sami, and is the front 22 spline
this should tied me over untill i get t-case gears

I know a sidekick front is a direct bolt in if you plan on no locker for the front .what years I can't rember 95 and older I think the rears you can put r p in sami carrier with can and shim .That is what I am going to run with 5:12s as sonn as UPS gets here front is done rear is apaert waitng on reasslby.

sami front's are 17sp, and i've seen kicks with 17 and 26 sp, but never a 22  swapping side gears the alum 3rd will directly drop into your zuk housing, but the alum 3rd isn't a good idea, getting a carrier retaining can and swapping the gears into a zuk case is the best idea :D

yeah it's auto '

dsi.
just went out and counted again it's 22 spline, it came from a 89 tracker auto 2 door.. don't know the motor size.

thanx for your help guys. sunday, i bought home a 88 jx, body in super shape ( no rust) , motor locked up. going to combine the 2 with the tracker gears, spring over, some lockers:eek: .. can't wait

Most auto's come with 4.62 gears which have 37 teeth on the ring gear and 8 on the counter gear. From what I understand the 4.88 gearsets come only in 1998 and later Tracker/Kicks, but I have never even had one of them in my posession.
Here is a list of the gears with tooth counts that are available in the Tracker/Sidekick's:

-4.30 43/10 1995 and later models with auto (no overdrive)

-4.625 37/8 1989 and later models with auto (some with & some without O/D)

-4.875 39/8 1998 and later models with 5-speed & 2.0 liter engine

-5.125 41/8 1989 and later models with 5-speed

-5.625 45/8 1989 5-speed models with the 1.3 engine

This is the best list I have compiled at this time and keep in mind when looking that Suzuki has done some weird gear swapping in a few vehicles so the above gearing guide is not always correct....I have seen a 5.125 gearset in a 1993 Sidekick JLX with auto which typically would have had a 4.62 in it.

If you plan on dropping a Sidekick gearset in your Zuk the aluminum will drop right in, but swapping out to a Samurai steel carrier is definately the best for strength. The Tracker/Kick front 3rd members do drop into the rear, but you need to swap over to the Samurai rear carrier and sidegears. DO NOT use the aluminum carier in the rear or you will easily break it and overheat the gears since there is no oil circulation channel like in the Samurai rear 3rd member. The best bet in the rear is to swap in a Hybrid axle housing, because of it's strength.

Good luck on your hunt!

Sidekicks had 22 spline diffs up through 95, and went to 26 spline in 96 and later. I think the 1.6/8 valve had the 4.30 diff in the auto, and the 1.6/16 valve went to the 5.125 diff in the auto, same as the manual. I chucked all that, when I upgraded my 95 to the ARB's with the 26 splines, and 5.83 R&P's. Nice change!

Oh, and I believe the 1989 model (first year of production) was the ONLY Sidekick with a 1.3.

Yes, the 1989 Sidekick was the only one with a 1.3 and 5.625 gears. The 1995 and later 1.6 16 valve's have the 4.30 gearing when used with the auto's without overdrive. As I said in the last post there are some bastard's out there with weird gearing combo's in them so there's no telling what's in these vehicles without actually counting the teeth.

What's really weird, is I swear I had a 1.6 TWELVE valve in my '92 Kick. Wish I had pics of that thing. Everybody says they never made such a beast. My 91 Kick had the 8 valve. All three of my 95's had/have the 16 valve.

All my kicks have been manual tranny's.

You can use two front sets of gears or a front set of gears and a rear 3rd member with housing to make a hybrid which is the stronger way to go. The aluminum 3rd member does work in the front, but it is no where near as strong as the steel housing, it has no oil recirculation channel in it so the gears do not get enough oil to make them last under hard coutinious use, and you cannot run a locker in the aluminum since the carrier is different.
Any other Q's?

Ok so to run sidekick gears in a sammi carrier you need to get two rear sets(Of course of the same ratio) and the fronts are of no use because of the weak aluminum carrier????
The trick is to get a Grand Vitara Manual Tranny carrier. They're steel. The only issue, is that they have a small hole machined into them (10mm if I recall correctly), that needs to be plugged so your fluid doesn't drain out! See the red plug in this photo...

To simplify what others have said:
Sidekick/Tracker front ring and pinions will install into either end of a samurai. You need a “can” or some other device to retain the cross pins because the ring gear is so thin it won’t retain cross pins.
This is what most people do, instead of swapping the sidekick/tracker complete third member into a samurai.
I have very little experience with sidekick/tracker stuff. What I do know from experience is:
A sidekick/tracker rear end has a larger carrier and ring gear than a samurai, however use the exact same axle shaft diameter and spline count. Therefore, a hybrid kick and samurai will strengthen your carrier and do absolutely nothing to keep you from breaking axles. Since you will be using the stock zuk axles (common sense).
Some early sidekick/trackers had the exact same third as a samurai, obviously the housing and axle lengths were different. These are easy to identify by the four bolts that hold the hub to the axle in the center of the drum. Don’t know what ratios were available, but if you area lucky enough to find one you should be able to scavenge the R&P from the front and swap in the entire rear chunk for a gear swap.

Have you IFS Kick guys seen this? Looks pretty cool.

Steel Housing

This is better (and what I'm running) because it eliminates the separate mounting brackets (stronger), and has a "stub axle" on the passenger side, so you use the Driver's Side CV Axle Shaft on BOTH sides (fewer spares to carry):

EDIT: DSI - Even ARB's documentation for the Samurai Air Lockers show a 22 spline front - that's just bizarre.

i even re-counted the front side gear i had laying loose, 17 splines, what gives here?? even counted both ends of a sammi inner axle, nothing comes out to 22

Hmmmph... ok i ocunt 22 there, but why do we have a ton of 3rd with 17sp side gears?
Either you are fawkin' with us, or you have a bunch of the rare Roswell thirds. Supposedly brought here from space and hidden from us by the military. Seriously, the 410 rears I have are 22/26 spline too. Maybe you have some LJ20 thirds or something. (Now some specs nut can let us know the spline count of these)

the 94 tracker diff i got has 4.61 ,37/8 gears, how tough would it be to make the carrier from the tracker fit the sami housing, or run the tracker rear in the sami with maybe a cv drive shaft.. will the 1989 tracker have 26 spilnes? the 89 i got the 4.87 in the junk yard still has the rear , should i get it. or look for another front 4.87

#22 ·
Better count those teeth again. Suzuki only made a 4.88 in the late 90's. If it's out of a 1989 it WILL be a 5.12 unless someone swapped out the gears previously which is a pretty slim chance.

Put a hybrid in the rear and Tracker front chunk in the front of your Zuk and be done with it for now. Don't mess with everything, just keep it simple. This post has already gotten out of hand.... Get that SEARCH feature working.

as usual, did more searching,, didn't find what i need...

i'm going back to get the rear axle from the 89' tracker i got the front 4.87' s out of. i understand that they are both 26 spline, and the tracker 3rd member (rear) is too big to fit in the sami. what if i cut the tubes from the sami, swap them on the tracker center .. a guy down the street cuts down ford 9" housings for drag cars so the cutting of tubes isn't a big deal. has anyone done this, and have you had any problems with this setup?

Heepdaddytj,
Last time I looked you had "NEWBIE" posted right under your name as well........Fawkin Newbie! LOL! :flipoff2:

what if i cut the tubes from the sami, swap them on the tracker center
That is a hybrid....Fawkin Newbie! LOL! :flipoff2:
Then you can have a hybrid with those mysterious 4.87 gears :flipoff2:
