Trailer tongue extension

I have an old boat and trailer. I want to extend the tongue on it a few feet so I can add a receiver tube and cargo carrier directly to my trailer. I have a need for hauling camping gear, full size grill etc that doesn't fit in my boat easily or in the back of my Jeep.

I was quoted $800 from a trailer builder to make the modifications. They were going replace the entire run of tubing from the cross member forward and all kinds of other crazy things. Anyway was just too much money for me. I thought I'd just not be lazy and do it myself.

Then while searching around online I came across these
Fulton - Fold-Away Couplers

I was thinking I could just cut my coupler off and put one of these where it was and then add a new coupler to 3' or so of 3x3 tubing. This would give me the space needed for a cargo carrier.

Thoughts on if this would work? My boat is small and light, 16' boat maybe weight 1200lbs with motor and gear.
If so, what wall thickness on the tubing?

I'd chop it and weld in an section of square tube on the tongue there. Simple square tube, looks like it's a fairly light trailer, no reason to make it too hard. I would try to find a section of tube to sleeve the inside, going back about 6" behind where the 2 side rails tie in and about 6" forward of the front weld just to be safe. Weld that in and weld the insert section, should be more than strong enough as long as your welds are decent. I would try to flip the trailer so you could always be welding it downhand since overhead and vertical welding is not the easiest to do.

Would have some concern about rusting though, especially inside the tube. Not sure what to do about that, maybe fill it full of paint?

Nothing special about welding galvanized, just be aware that the zinc will burn off and breathing the fumes is not good - grind it off first or just make sure you have good ventilation.

I don't understand exactly what you're trying to do. Add a cargo carrier to your jeep, add one to the tongue of the trailer, or what? Could always add a receiver to the rear of the trailer or the front of the Jeep and leave the tongue the hell alone.

I want the cargo rack on the tongue. It would allow me to more easily adjust the tongue weight. Since I primarily tow with my jeep with and the springs are pretty soft in it. I don't want 500lbs of camping gear on the bumper and 250lbs of boat weight on there. If the cargo rack is on the tongue I have the ability to slide the boat back on the trailer and off load some of it's weight. I realize things don't weigh all that much. But I really hate being that guy with headlights pointed in the air when they drive down the road.
