I'm swapping in a Dana 300 to my TJ and converting over to pass-drop axle up front. I figure while I'm doing this I'll replace the weak AX5 tranny with an SM465, that way I'll have a bulletproof drivetrain. I've seen many an adapter for the SM465 to the 258 or 242, but none for my little 2.5L 4-banger. I'm set on keeping the 4-banger, so don't really want to hear people telling me I need to swap in a different motor.

Anyone know of putting this tranny behind this motor?

thanks,
evan

all jeep 4-cyls use the chevy 60* bolt pattern from the 2.8 v6, etc. This is also the same as chevy's 2.5L.

However this is NOT the same as the I6 bolt pattern.

There is luck though, if by some chance the gutless wonder is able to toast the ax5, I BELIEVE you can swap in an ax15 using the ax5's bellhousing. I also think it is a bolt in swap.

an sm465 would be a rather odd transmission to put behind such a small motor.

Hopefully somebody else can confirm this.

If you are dead set on the 465

might be usefull,

I don't think the swap would be worth it.

The 465 can be run behind the 4 banger, its been done and the info is on the board here, think Keith Strong had a thread about it a while back. Probably a great swap if all you ever do is low gear crawlin, but the gear jumps are huge for a 4 banger that likes to keep the rpm's up to be happy. A better bet would be swapping in a nv3500 with a doubler to the 300 case. Search for threads started by myself and YJ4rox in the jeep hardcore section for the detailed threads. You'll need a bellhousing from a dodge dakota to bolt the tranny up. In the end you'll have a close ratio 5 speed that will keep the rev happy 4 banger where it needs to be, an over drive so you can run deep enough ring and pinion gears to get around on the hard pack, and a doubler for crawling. Basically it will be a bullet proof setup for the 4 banger with alot more options than an old granny gear 4 speed and you'll be alot happier in the long run.

You might look around for information about the 5.7 diesel that was put into trucks back in the day. I know it didn't have the normal chevy pattern, but I don't know if it was the metric pattern or not. I'm sure somewhere out there there would be a sm465 behind a 5.7 diesel.

Good luck.

465 is basically a later improved version of the 420, so all the info should apply.

I still wouldnt do it tho, not with a 4 banger. Wind out first, hit second and it will fall on its face since it will be running about 1500 rpm if your lucky. 4 banger has nothing below 2200 rpm and doesn't really come alive till over 3000. If you need wheel speed for a climb, you'll be screwed.
