I apologize ahead of time if this is a newb question and if it has already been discussed but I cant seem to get the search to show me what I want to see.

I am looking a buying a 92 4runner with the 3.slow. My whole yota life I have spent avoiding that engine just cause I love the reliability and simplicity of the 22re. Anyways, the motor has 196K miles on it. Its super clean with no signs of wear inside or out. The seller says they did the timing belt, water pump and all other maintenance stuff. It runs strong and smooth. How much longer can I reasonably expect it to last past the 200K miles mark? Its basically going to be a daily driver just to haul my family and my surfboards to the beach. I may wheel it a bit, but nothing serious or consitent. I dont plan on building another rig until I get off the island where yota parts are priced by their weight in gold!!!:mad3:

Anyways, that was way to long to simply ask can I rely on driving a 3.slow with 200K miles on it for the next 3 years at least? Thanks in advance!

ive got like 190k on the DD 4runner with this motor...if you take off the oil pan and a bearing cap, it looks new...it has a bad name because its underpowerend and a gas guzzler, not for unreliabilty...id way reather have a 22re for simplicity and ease of maintenance though

I have about 240k on mine. I did all the regular maintenance (timing belt, water pump, regular oil changes, plug changes, etc..) and it still runs real strong (for a 3.slow) It was a DD for a couple years and has been wheeled hard for the past year or so and is still holding up. Gas guzzler? yes. Underpowered? yes. But its been good to me.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I am just going to get it. It is SUPER clean inside and out and it runs great. I will just keep my fingers crossed that it wont take any major dumps on me. As long as it lasts my tour here. Thats all I need. Thanks again!

My 3.0 that is coming out soon has 220K on it. It is certainly underpowered but reliable all the same. I thought about getting it rebuilt but for what it costs to get it done, I thought I could do better with a 4 cyl engine swap. So, there will be a 2RZ-FE(142HP/160TQ) going in. It has 8HP/20TQ less than the 3VZ-E(150HP/180TQ) but it will be lighter and able to rev higher and still get better fuel economy.

the question is how far do you plan on driving it over the next three years? A friend of mine had a 10 year old wrangler at his home on the island of St Maartin that he bought new, it had about 8500 miles on it when he got rid of it(too rusty).
If you plan on making laps around the island all day, maybe not. A friend of mine has a 3.0 4Runner that has just over 230K, I drove it last summer for a week and its still fine, wouldn't hesitate to drive it anywhere.

Okay, I am a big 22RE fan. But, I now own a 3.0L. Other than the little f'n sensor issue I recently had, this 3.0 would run circles around the 22RE's I've had in the past power wise. It has MUCH better top end power than the 22RE. When it hits 3000rpms its like it gains an extra two cylinders. Like most yotas the power band is above 3000rpms.

It currently has 4.10s and 33s on it and I have no issues with the power and holding speed in 5th into a headwind. I have the SAS kit, Rear kit, front axle, 5.29s, and 35s ready to go under it when I get a free week at the shop. I honestly cannot wait to have it geared correctly for the tires I am running. That will probably sell me on it.

I have always told people, "Just so NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO to the 3.OOOOOOOOOO". But, in a 1st gen 4runner, I think the power to weight ratio is perfect with that motor. The 2nd gen 4runner will likely be slower, but if you step up the gearing to compensate, then it should be just fine.

It seems that as long as its taken care of and not beaten on it should be a fine motor. I've got a friend who wheels with one and he hasn't had problems yet.

I just bought a 92 Runner, 3.0, 5 spd and this thing far out drives my 86 turbo 22re with auto. Although the auto in my 86 is a pile too.

Ive got 190k on my 88 DD and its somewhat quick. No problems and I beat it to death everyday in Chicago rush hour traffic!!! My wheling rig had a 3.0 in it and it was also flawless (150k). But I ruined the Trans and the planets aligned on a 3.4 donor so It now has a 3.4L and i sold the 3.0L.

If it has made it that far it has had the head gasket recall done on it, and if your coolant is clean you should be good to go.

You can do a combustion leak test on your cooling system to see if you have any traces of CO's or HC's in the coolant. if the head gasket is starting to go that test would show positive WAYY before it starts running hot or pumping coolant into the cylinders.

The 3.0's would have been a ROCK solid engine if Toyota would have put MLS gaskets in it from the get go.

I have seen a boat load of them go way over 200k.
