Ok go easy on me here. Im still learning but through searching I think this is a reasonable plan. Just want a sanity check.
I have a lead on a 88 F350 D60 front and sterling 10.25 rear, 351 says it runs and he just rebuilt it but needs headers and hasn’t been fired up since rebuild. All for $500. Im really just after the 60 so everything else is a bonus.
Problem:
The 88 D60 has a diff offset 3.5” more to the drive side. This would be an issue swapping into a LJ due to the offset and frame clearance (stock motor, trans and TC) if I were to keep it full width, correct?
The plan:
-Shorten the passenger side tube 3.5” and use a 78-79 aftermarket pass side inner shaft. Thus bringing my WMS to ~65.75”.
-Gears, ARB, rebuild.
-35 spline outers and warn hubs eventually. Already has lockouts which I plan to use for the time being.
Going off numbers I have found online: (Sorry bout the crappy color quality, looking for a good way to turn DWG. files into quality JPEGS.)
Original WMS = 69.25
I read that someones driver spring perch to pinion center was 7.5” CAN SOMONE CONFIRM THIS?
That gives an axle center to pinion center dimension of 10.75” and pinion to driver WMS of 23.875.
Original axle center line to pinion center = 10.75
Pass Cut down 3.5”
WMS = 65.75”
Axle center line to pinion center = 9”
Sound reasonable?
Questions:
-Would this center the pinion with my TC output well enough to prevent binding or vibs from the front drive shaft?
-Can anyone confirm the driver WMS to pinion center of the 85-99 Ford D60s?
-One reason for the swap is to get a better pinion angle while achieving an acceptable caster. (I want to be able DD this if I put this much effort in it) Has anyone needed to change angle of the inner Cs to maintain caster and get the proper pinion angle? (Currently running 13-14* pinion on my LP D30 right now IIRC) And, Yes I know I can disconnect the hubs on the 60.
Any other thoughts or comments would be great. From what I have read I think I should be able to run a 3 link front set up with out too much trouble.
Thanks to everyone for talking me out of a D44, into the 60 and out of my $$$
