Fender trim on an 85 4-Runner??

I did a search and came up with a lot of very usefull info except with regard to the inner fender. My current project has a good amount of rust around the rear fender opening so a trim job is in order. How have you dealt with the inner fenders? A few close up pics would be very helpfull;)

TIA!

Well on my Runner tub that I just got rid of last week. I cut out the rear fender skirt about 3 inches. If you look the inner fender skirt it is flat and than comes down close to 2- 3 inches and connects to the outter body. The only problem after cutting to get the inner skirt to connect cleanly., Sorry I don't have any pictures, but it helped me clear my 37's :D with rear chevys. If done right you could even cut it a little long and bent it in and make a clean bend.

What I am going to do is get someone to bend me a peice of DOM and cut out the rear fenderwell edge fab some tubing it into my rock slidders and than do the sheet work and weld it in to the DOM.

Hope this helps

thats a great job on trimming there,:D kudos.

Now how big did you go in cutting 2-3 inches or more, hard to tell from the pic.

Do you have a finished outside pic?

How big of a tire are you running in there now?

I want to do the same to mine to get 35" at least in there, and maybe bigger without going any higher with lift.Looks like it was pretty easy . How about the fronts ,did you do those as well?:D

Thanks for any help you can give me ;)

Doesnt the 4-runner fender support the rollbar mounting? If you cut the fenderwells, wont it seriously weaken the rollbars ability to save your ass in a rollover or wreck?

I have been thinking about doing this same thing, but am concerned about then having to build some new rollcage or exo.

You know i'll have to look into that ,all though i think the brace across the body is actually attatched to the frame mount that the roll bar is bolted to.

Maybe someone has done this before and can enlighten us...:D

That would be a pain if we had to reattatch that somehow huh..

Damn, Well we'll just have top make it work...:D

Weld, grind ,bolt, grind some more weld even more. :D

My trim

Welded to outside

Glassing over

It was a LOT of work, and it still looks like crap. I like the method posted above more. I cosidered it - but it looked harder to pull that off - at the time.

I then followed up with some sealer - almost like a caulk from the body supply store.

Finished outside pic

I followed it up with a little more trimming just this passt weekend. That came out better! :D

Paul- I learned a lot doing this and would be happy to share what I learned with you when you get ready to do it. Heck, I'm not that far from you. Maybe you could drive out and check it out sometime;)

My friends is on 37's, 4" A-P springs I think, could be 5's, minimal cutting, no BL (I think) and he get very little rubbage.

Most of the flared area around the wheel wells on my runner is full of rust. The area just behing the wheel wells to the tail lights is also rusted out. Is it possible to trim all of this out and seal it up without making it look like a POS. I am not an amazing bodyman, but I am willing to try anything once, well almost anything:rolleyes: (pics would be most appreciated!!!!!)

Don't worry, you can do it. Just have to tub the firewall. I don't know if you remember mine from the Jambo, but I'm running a very similar setup on the 89 X-cab. Running 51" rear hybrids, 2" drop hangar, 4" shackles under frame, 63" Chevy, 9" shackle, but no BL. I rub a bit, but need to tub it up front.

Anyways, It's nice and low, and stable, but has a bunch of clearance from the 37's.
