Can someone on here show some example pics of failed frames when not plating the sides at the joints? I want to show someone that this as it is is a bad idea:

Looking at the shitty welds, not cleaning the areas to be welded with a flap wheel all I see is fail written all over it. Yes it does need to be plated, what special school does your buddy go to?

PLATE those joints! 1/8" would be ok with some long fish plates and rosets. Stock rails are only 1/8" on outside, top ,and bottom. Did he go all the way to the factory joint on the inside of the rail? Do a 8-10" stagger and weld it up and then take your grinder to the top and bottom with 1/4" thick wheel , slice the rail so you can put a 3/16" plate through the inside. Then weld that to the rail top and bottom.

I never said it was a friend or a buddy, I've never met him. Just a guy on our local board and I was trying to offer him some constructive critism. That's why I was looking for some fail pics to show him it's a bad idea.

I already showed him how I did mine:

I didn't start this thread to bash him, but rather show him why I disagree, looking for pics...

I would let him learn by failing, just stay of the trail/road when he is on it. Some people buy a welder from Home Depot and find some scrape steel. They then combine the two and believe they actually know something about fabrication. Let their mistakes encourage others to actaully educate themselves before attempting to fabricate something so critical. On another note, as a welder by trade, I encourage the process as it adds job security to me and my family. :flipoff2:

frame is 2x5 3/16th thick, truck has been airborn multipal times, even recently flipped with not damage to any of the frame i build. i may add some plates now that everything is ripped down but i drove it for 8 months on the rd and trails problem free. but thanks for everyones consern :flipoff2:

everything was welded by some who knows what they are doing, the welds penetrated just fine and sorry i didnt care to clean them up. but its solid

not sure how my cross members are trailer inspired? if you are referring to the gas tank bracket it was only a temporary fix, tank if moved now.

all the metal was brand new and very well cleaned before welding, this picture was just after a couple of days sitting outside. the welds are more then strong.

like i said before, i have jumped this truck a couple of times without problem and recently rolled it, how else would you like me to prove its strong?????? i have landed so hard i bent the factory steering wheel all the way back against the column.

7 months later still in perfect working order after being jumped

sounds good :smokin: ignore all the dumbass keyboard warriors that are afraid of life and think their the baddest fabbers ever, they like to jerk off thinking how bad they just reamed some guy on pirate. more then half the douche bags replying here wouldnt even have the balls to attempt building their own frame, but they read about fish plates on pirate so they are now experts, especially at determining the thickness of steel tubing from low quality pics.

the frame will probably hold up like it has been, but go ahead and add some fish plates just to make it that much stronger, it wont take much work or time.

I agree with rockyota just ignore the shit. We have equipment trailers that arenot fishplated and have been fine the past 10 years. If welded properly it will be plenty strong. It's up to you on the plates, but remember it will only make it stronger.

why is that because people starting bashing it? it is welded properly and has been beat to hell already. if it was welded so bady, and i used such bad material and ****ed it all up. how come i have jumped it, beat it, drove it into a tree at 20 and bent the front factory part of the frame but yet no damage to the rear for almost a year now? really luck?? i dont think so, i have had it looked at by many people in the fab world and no one has had anything bad to say about it other then people on the internet that haven't seen it in person.

get used to it, the internet is full of idiots.

fish plating the butt welds makes it stronger so the internet retards that read that on the internet automatically assume if its not fish plated then its going to fail and kill a bus full of nuns, what they dont consider is there are dozens of other critical high stress parts butt welded on thousands of different vehicles that hold up just fine.

fish plate the butt welds so their super strong and ignore the internet retards that dont get the fact people are more likely to take your advice if you talk to them like a decent human being, theres tons of great information here on pirate, you just have to deal with the idiots to get it.

Don't let it get to ya man. Alot of these guys on here are web wheelers and don't know shit about fabrication. Just blind sheep thy will concur with what everyone is saying. Hell some of them don't even have wheelers. They like to just act like they know what they are doing.
My .02 sas that bitch and flatbelly it.

i know how it is here, i have looked at the forums for over a year just never joined bacause of this kinda stuff. but if my own stuff is going to end up on here i will be there to say something about it. its funny you say about sas and flat belly, that is what i am going right now (cutting of ifs tomorrow). need to get a new cab and will build a nice tranny tunnel up the mittle. there is a lot of custom work coming from me, will post some pics when its "pirate worthy"
