H2 rims/tires on 1998 CTD - questions

So I picked up some used H2 take-offs last week to try out on my 1998 CTD. A few things:

1. I used a router to machine the wheel centers, and it was surprisingly easy and only cost me about $19 for the router bit (I'll post pics and details later). I was able to do it with the tires on - which was a huge plus IMHO.

2. I had previously been running 285/75 16 tires on my Dodge, and I was worried that stepping up to 315/70 17 would not fit. I haven't "flex" tested it yet, but on a quick ride-n-drive they seem to fit the stock suspension without rubbing. I did pick up a 2" leveling kit for the front just in case - it might still go on.

That said, I don't know if it's the bigger tire size, or the different tire compound or what - but the ride kinda sucked. I need to double check air pressure, but on the road test I got some off bounces with them. New shocks all around, so that *shouldn't* be an issue. Maybe I will get lucky and it was an air pressure issue.

But what do you guys do about the speedo being off? And by off, I mean WAY the hell off  I fired up the GPS and when the speedo said 60 I was actually going 74 :shaking: I know on the later trucks the speedo is electronic and can be recalibrated with a programmer... but what about these 12v trucks?

I'm gonna put some miles on it this weekend and decide - but at this point I'm considering going back to the rims & tires I had... the ride was just not as tame as I had hoped for.

Thoughts?

I have the exact same setup on my 99. When i had edelbrock shocks they were terrible right outta the box. I've been really happy with the bilsteins i picked up though. And yeah, when my speedo says 70 it really means 79. I had to put a leveling kit on mine to make it fit but other than that i'm really happy with the ride and looks of the truck.

These are ProComp shocks, less than 10k miles on them, and they seemed fine before the tire/wheel swap.

What did you do with the centers? I was going to try cutting down the stock centers to fit the H2 rims this weekend...

So after a little reading, it looks like I need to head to the dealer to get the speedo gear from a truck that came with 4.1- gears - this sound right to anyone else?

its very easy to get a set of 3rd gen dodge centers cut down to fit. the 2nd gens with the full circle clip just doesn't want to jive.

heres how I cut the 3rd gen caps for my truck. trim the skirt back about 3/4" inch ( measure yourself to be sure) and trim each tab back to about 1/16" or so with tin snips. they snap right on.

these are 33" M/T MTZs I had 35" BFG M/Ts on it before with 2 front spacers no problem.

Oh that makes sense I could change my tires size calibrations with my smarty and quadzilla in the ABS section. but i suppose thats not possible on mech trucks. I was mislead then when I put the '95 diff into my '98.5 everything worked as normal.

YES!

The 12v motors might be mechanical, but nothing else is. You don't think that Chrysler knew about the upcoming motor changes before the '98 model year started and changed as much ahead of time?

Like I said before, even the older trucks were still electronic speedos, but they at least had a gear that you could swap.

Oh well - that was short lived - didn't feel like dealing with this mess right now so I bought some new 16" rims and went back to my old tires
