how thick for clevis/shackle mounts

Im making a rear bumper, and have seen several people using the frame mounts as clevis mounts by extending them some. How thick should the plate be, 1/2" thick enuf or should it be thicker?

I alwas thought you didnt want to have frame mounts much thicker than the frame. This would be on a C channel ford frame, which I think is about 3/16, maybe 1/4 inch thick

Usually I make them end up 3/4" wide. On front XJ bumpers like my own, I use 1/4" plate, extend it through the bumper, then plate that 1/4" thick tab with two more 1/4" tabs.

That way the shackle can't deflect with an angled pull. Make sense?

On TJ bumpers where the mounts aren't perpendicular to the bumper I run some 2"x3/4" stock straight through and weld it front and back.

That's just the way I do it, I can dig up some pics if you'd like...

You want the mount to take up the entire opening of the shackle, if its thinner, the space should be taken up with washers so there is no movement of the shackle pin which could lead to side loading. I've also seen 1/2" mounts bent on side pulls, even with the shackle pin properly supported. Plenty of bent tow hooks out there to tell us that a bit of overkill in a recovery mount is not a bad thing.

Here's those pics.

On these TJ rear bumpers I just used 2"x3/4" with a 1 1/16" hole.

Plasma cut the holes all nice and pretty like, then welded them on the front.

And back. They are frenched so I didnt have to grind that weld off too much to get the mounting plates on. The mounting plates also have a slot cut in them, which I will plug weld to the shackle tabs, as well as perimeter weld to the bumper itself. The name of the game with thicker stuff and recovery points is weld area, so make as much as you can.

Here's what I did on my XJ.

Started with these plates. Then made two more ears out of 1/4" to bring the total width to 3/4"

Assembled like so.

Welded in the crossmember all nice and pretty.

Shows that plating a little better.

Hope that helps ya. ;)

thats more what i was talking about. thanks

I did something similar to your first pics on the front with 4x4 square. These are welded on front and back sides

the winch will sit on top of the square.

BUT, in the rear the winch has to sit between the frame rails, with a tube above and below. im trying to figure out how to integrate shackle mounts into the bumper frame mounts that will support the two pieces of tube. sorta similar to this one without the fender protection

I just got done welding in some 1" thick by 3" x 4.5" shackle mounts on the frame i'm building. Ordered them from Rockstomper.com, $80 for the shackles and about $16 for shipping. I got the ones that you weld on the inner and outer sides of the bumpers. Much stronger than just welding them onto the face of the bumper.

Mine are 3/4" thick by 1.75". I just fillet welded them to the face of the 2x4x1/4" front bumper. Made two passes all the way around it with Er70S6 .035 wire. Thats 70,000 psi tensile strength so if that breaks it'll probably rip my frame in half first.
