I'm looking for a winch for the front of my YJ, and I found a used HS9500. I have done a lot of googling, and I see that Warn no longer make the HS9500. This kinda bothers me. Does anyone have any Good / Bad things to say about that winch. Any issues getting parts for it should it break??? What do you think would be a good price for it used...?

Thanks for the help... Jamie

I've got a HS9500i on the front of my buggy. They're good winches. They're VERY fast with no load though, so careful with that switch.

Parts shouldn't be an issue. I busted one of the planetaries in mine back in October. I pulled up a diagram online and got the part numbers, called my local Warn dealer and had them within a week. I think most of the parts are the same as other models.

P.S. I don't attribute my break to an issue with the HS models. The break was caused by a big shock load situation. I'm pretty confident that any winch would've busted under those circumstances.

When they were first introduced, I got together with 9 buddies and did a sort of a group buy to get a better deal. I've kept in touch over the years and all are still going strong and I've personally racked up 100's of pulls on mine.

There is a slight issue with losing ground to the motor through the end caps that is remedied by either tightening up the motor screws that attach it to the housing or similar. It's never happened to mine or the ones I know, so I'm a LOT fuzzy on the particulars.

I have the HS9500 and it's way fast and hell strong. I don't use it that much, but when I do I have the confidence that it's not going to let me down. I think it's going to be considered a "classic" like the 8274. BTW, I run 100+ feet of 3/8 poly rope on it, and it works great.

I did recently have a problem where the motor was stuck, but all it took to fix it was to take off the motor cover and run a brush over the armature to remove some schmutz that was in there.

I had an issue with the first set of planets failing. The stamped steel housing that the sun gears are held in stripped out where the input gear is(for lack of better terms). A little over $150 gets the entire side case and planets.

Other than that, it has been a fantastic winch for 8+ years in the rust belt.

Best winch I have ever owned. Had it for years.

I think they discontinued it because they came out with the thermo-whatever winch. Very fast.

I had one too, actually still have it, and plan on fixing it when I get the extra $$ that doesn't have something else it needs to go towards. It was always fast and I never had any troubles with it. OK well I guess I can’t say never, although it wasn’t due to fault of the winch. The remote cable got shut in the door a time to many and it cut the wires causing it to short and killing the remote and frying the solenoids, A new remote and some solenoids are all it needs, But the last Time I checked the solenoid pack was pretty expensive and I haven’t been able to get all of the research done to find some different solenoids to put on there and get it wired up correctly.
