Are these axles >>Military M715 - M725 1 ¼ TON DANA AXLES
the same as the D-70?? Would they be considered a better upgrade than the front D-60?? and the rear 14b?? What would make them better or no better??

arnt those birf frnt axle with like 10 splines ??? all i've heard about them says there week and VERY hard to get parts for ... and that weird rockwell lug patter .... :(

The front is a dana 60 that "can" be modified to run 35 spline shafts (a friend has done it and it worked great).

It is not a birfield, but a non sealed 5-332x sized ujoint in the closed knuckle. Overall, not a bad axle, but the savings in intial cost is outweighed by the costs to modify it to run larger shafts.

The rear Dana 70 is 1.5" 23 spline (or thereabouts) and I think all came with a detroit. Good axle. Have not seen one break even with 44" TSL's on them.

As said above, they have a funkly 6 bolt lug pattern necessitating custom wheels, and there are no kits to convert the drum brakes to disc, so you will have front and rear drums unless you want to spend some dough for custom stuff.

Overall they are very good, strong axles that you "can" do alot with, but if you want to use them to save $$ over the more modern D60 and D70 axles, you are probably not going to save in the end.

Ed pretty well nailed it except that they came to the military unlocked at both ends. There are detroits available for both, and I run them in my 715. I think it's a neat truck. No lift, 38" swampers, sbc engine. They come geared with 5.88's, big drum brakes, the noted big 6 lug pattern. I have yet to break any axle (or other bits), but I'm a pretty conservative driver. T-98 four speed, np200 transfer, good stout bits. Front inner axles are readily availalbe and cheap, so you can carry spares and replace them as needed. As Ed noted you can beef up the front inners, but it's a fairly involved and expensive job, and I think Mike(that's his name, right?) detailed it on the web somewhere. I think he's in Nolan's Black Sheep club...rear detroit ~$250, front ~$350. Not sure it's the most cost effective swap...

You are correct, it's Mike Green (billyji on POR) that converted the inners and outers to 35 spline alloy shafts and runs a regular 332x series (soon to be CTM?) joint. He does have it documented somewhere, but I have no idea where. Maybe an M715 board somewhere?
