Power Steering questions

Not sure if I put this in the right place, but here goes. I have a 92 toyota pickup with a 350 chevy engine from around `78. I am using the stock toyota 4x4 power steering gear box and the stock chevy power steering pump of that era. Its worked good enough for years and the stock toyota box had 200K on it when the odometer stopped working. Also its turning 38.5x11 boggers on a dana 44 axle with a crossover steering setup. My trouble is that I can't turn the wheels with it sitting still and on the ground. I can turn them fine when the truck is jacked up. All I get is alot of noise (squeak and the sound of the pump turning) I've bled the system alot. Ran Lucas through it and it will work better cold then after awhile gets to the point where I almost can't steer.
I'm thinking maybe the gear box is worn out especially with as much play as I have in it. Is it something that is rebuildable? I can take apart and put about anything so I'm not affraid to try.

There is write up on how to rebuild the stock pump in the Toy FAQ. "http://128.83.80.200/taco/box.html" is a guy that sells all the seals and has a write up or Toyota of Dallas sells rebuild kits as well. You can get em rebuilt and tapped from a variety of vendors for a pretty good price if you choose to go the hydro assist route like myself and many others have done.

Does it sound like I need to rebuild the gear box? I don't like just trying stuff to see what fixes what. In my job I troubleshoot stuff all day long and am trained and encouraged to not waste parts trying to fix stuff and I like to bring that thinking home with me as well. Besides its cheaper:)

Okay putting a pressure gauge on it sounds cool. Any clue how much pressure I'd be looking for or what I'd be looking for? A drop when turning or something?

Also are the rebuild kits expensive?

Here is the section from a 93 FSM, read pages SR-42 to SR-44.

The seal kits run about fifty to sixty dollars, if you had gone to the web page I posted you would have known that. Some time on here we give you places to go to to get the answers you need, so read.

I think stock pressure is in the 750-1000psi range. I used a 2000-3000psi gauge on mine. What I found was that I was not getting much pressure, turned out to be a leaking seal in the steering ram (hydro assist) and that was bleeding all the fluid out of the box and not letting the pressure build. You should see a low pressure sitting and then it should jump up when you need steering assist.

I'm gonna take that as a severe insult. I"m not some dumbass noob to the internet. I've been around longer than this site has exsisted and was on this site over 7 years ago and got bored of it for a bit. I'm also a mod on many sites and I have never told someone to read something instead of just anwsering there questions. Yal really got to get less sensitive to people asking questions. Now I"m back and I did read all links that were given to me including most of that FAQ which is very good, but did not see anything except sales crap about the steering products and no prices of any type.

You can ask questions 1000 times and then ask 1000 more and still get more valid information about the subject. Learning is a life long journey.

Take it any way you want to, I really do not give a shit. As I said before, if you had gone to the web page I posted you would have known how much they cost. I have been cruising the internet for about ten years and if someone gives me a link to a question I asked, I go to it and do not get butt-hurt about it.
