It's been a LONG time since I posted a build thread here. Times have changed and a lot of people (including myself) have started posted their pics and info on social media sites. I'm doing my part to help revive quality tech here, AND rebuild interest in the sport of rockcrawling. I know that Ultra 4 racing is the hot thing to do these days, but I really miss the days when comp crawling was king. Championships were won with junkyard parts, and no one needed a big motor or bypass shocks to win. Race prep meant checking the fluids and air pressure before you loaded the buggy up in the trailer!
The last true rockcrawler I built was my 2010 pro mod Willys. It was a very simple, traditional build. I wasn't pushing the limits of anything with that build, but it won 4 of the 7 comps I entered that year. By 2012 I had sold all of my crawlers and I'm currently competing in WE Rock with my junky old Willys buggy that I bought back last May. For the past couple years I've been competing against good teams with some great cars, better than what I've had to work with. I finally came to the decision that if I'm going to continue competing I need to have the most capable car in the class.
On to the build...
I'm straying from my standard production chassis for this build. I think this design will work a bit better in some situations and help me package things a little tighter. One of my main goals is to keep this as light as possible. Under 2500 lbs is the goal. As always, visibility is important to me so I'll be doing some cool stuff to help with that.
Specs -
1.5" 4130 chassis
103" wheelbase
'06 Chevy Malibu SS 3900 V6
4L60 trans built by Valley Trans in Reno
2.0 Atlas
Trail Gear Trail 9 complete axles and brakes
37" Maxxis Trepadors
17" x 9" - 5" BS Trail Gear Creeper Lock wheels
There will be a lot more to add later, and some parts are still undecided. Trail Gear will be the title sponsor for the car, and I'll be using quite a few of their products including their complete full hydro system, winch, weld washers, ect...
