Towing with a short bed single cab chev.

I'm gettin to the point where driving my rig 4+ hours to a trail is just miserable. My DD is a 91 VW GLI that i could probably get close to 4k for, and i'm thinkin that may be almost enough to get a pickup to tow my truck with.

Since its gonna be my DD i wanna get a short bed single cab cause i dont wanna have to deal with parking a 20' long truck everywhere. Plus i really like the look of the short chevys. I'm wondering how well a 5.7L shortbed will tow tho. I know Belly Dragger tows his rig with an extended cab 5.7 chevy and it tows alright, but i'm wondering about the shorter wheelbase. Do you think it would be ok to flat tow my 4k lb. rig? would it be better on a trailer? Suggestions? Also anyone have any tips for lookin for a early 90s shortbed single cab V8 for around $4k??? I'm already in mucho debt and would prefer to spend as little as possible over what i can sell my car for.

I towed with a '90 Z71 Regcab/shortbed for many years. Wheelbase was never really an issue for me towing a Jeep or Toy pickup. BTW, my 16' tandem axle trailer with wrap-around tongue & brakes on both axles weighs 1,400 lbs. Under absolutely NO circumstances should you attempt to tow in Overdrive with the automatic. I don't care if you're going downhill with a 40 MPH tailwind, leave that sucker in DRIVE if you want the tranny to live for any time AT ALL. In fact, I never ran mine in OD unless running empty at 70+ MPH.

Upgrading the radiator would be a good idea and maybe a lower temp thermostat.

I sold mine for $4,500 in December.

more then likely in a 1/2 ton there will be a 700R4 behind the 5.7. However, i have seen TH400's behind 5.7's...

i think it will pull just fine...a friend of mine used to tow his CJ-5(SOA, 304, t18, d20, 35" TSL) behind a 96 1/2 ton chevy chyenne that had the V6.....on a trip to clayton one year, he was running 80-85 no problem with the jeep on the trailer and a bed FULL of wood...

True that. There are a handful of early TBI 350's backed by TH400's in 1/2 ton trucks. You'll probably need to go at least back to 1990, if not '89 or '88 for that. My '90 had the TH700.

BTW, I think this kind of truck is perfectly "adequate" for towing a Jeep-sized vehicle. BUT, it's not a 3/4 ton & you do have to be a bit more cautious with speed & following distance (even with trailer brakes).

What about the 3/4 ton reg. cab SB chevys. i've seen a lot of em around here for sale, mostly commercial or government trucks. what is the difference between a 1/2 ton 5.7l pickup and a 3/4 ton 5.7l pickup?

Reg-cab/shortbed 2500? Doesn't exist.

That said, the difference between a 1500 & a 2500 depends. If the 2500 is of the 6-lug variety, the front suspension is the same, the rear suspension gets one extra leaf in each spring pack, and the rear diffy MIGHT be a SF14-bolt rather than the 10-bolt. Engine & tranny will be the same.

If the 2500 is of the 8-lug variety, the rearend WILL be a SF or FF 14-bolt (SF most likely), and the TH700 will NOT be an option.
