UROC "outside assistance" Rule, take note for SuperCrawl

Since the beginning of 2004, UROC has been allowing "outside assistance". It was a rule change that most teams never caught and was never formally announced by UROC. Still it has been there and used by some teams and is acceptable to UROC as it was disccussed and decided over last winter that it was easier to allow it than to try to police it.

This post is to let those that did not know, be clued in on the fact that you can take advantage of outside people yelling if you are close to a cone, forgot to let out your winch, forgot your ARB...all that and more. The rules only state that they cannot use a radio to do so.

Though we are disappointed when hearing this rule just a couple of weeks ago, to stay competitive with those that have been taking advantage of this we will be bringing a big enough group of people with knowledge of the sport to "assist" us in case we are about to get points because we had not seen something that a spectator might see. I recommend you do the same.

I voiced my opinion on the UROC forums and got support from most that also agree that this was wrong but still found the same result I did with progress points...

No, I am not excited but do want to stay competitive. If you disagree with the UROC decision, tell UROC professionally and maybe they will change their minds. Until then, step up and bring enough friends to help you catch those points you were stupidly about to take.

interesting twist to the never ending uroc saga.

the no outside assistance rule has to be the hardest one to abide by...i had the hardest time standing there and watching tonyk back into out of bounds at prorock.

I was gettin my ass handed to me by that little rock. It was for the best.

When I talk to people that see it for the first time and I explain the rules, most laugh.

No outside help....Hell, everyone is yelling something at you all the time.

Stop points...It's already got a time limit. And no 2 judges count the same.

Banners are gay. Sometimes you can and sometimes you can't. Just pick one.

Still the best (autoracing) game in town. We'll get it right soon enough. At least we didn't do something stupid and turn it into a playoff game (Nascar).

Seems like there'd be no way to enforce a rule if it didn't allow that. Gag order on the crowd? I don't see how. And who decides if it's a legitimate team effort or just a well-meaning spectator? I'm guessing they just wanted to avoid a subjective ruling.

UROC is pretty clever, they just increased the gate! I hope opposite doesn't happen to those depending on "outside assistance", I hear the Utah guys are semi pro "hecklers"!

But.... since the crowds will be somewhat removed from the obstacles, will this even be an issue at SuperCrawl?

This outside assistance rule was taken to far in St. George. Some of the judges were allowing team members other than the Spotter and Driver to come on the course and unstack rocks once the stage was completed. Several teams did this, the outside people helping their teams, moved many more rocks than the driver and spotter moved. including throwing the rocks further down the hill. That is just plain B.S. If the spotter and driver are too tired than that sucks for them. They need to cut this part out before it gets way out of control.

I see the potential for abuse, and having others move rocks is going too far, but the audience involvement is an interesting twist that could bring in more spectators. It's a lot more fun to shout and yell at your favorite drivers.

A big problem with this, is the well funded teams could put several people around each course as they drive it. I can see 10+ team members around the course each with binoculars shouting instructions to the drivers.

I know I enjoy rooting on other competitors... I've yelled out to other competitors we are competing against to "turn on yer air locker, dummy!" or "yer about to hit a cone!" more than once. It's all good in my book. I personally block everyone else out when spotting, as it is way too distractive...

- edit - however I don't agree with allowing outside team members to do things such as unstack rocks, etc... If the driver/spotter are too tired, then they need to put down the donuts and work out. :p

I agree, the outsiders on the course should and could be eliminated.

Physical outside assistance is NOT allowed. That rule is still there.

Outside communication, like yelling, cheering, etc. is allowed. Radio communication is NOT allowed, except between driver and spotter. This was put before the roundtable at the beginning of the year and they all agreed that it was silly to try to control people yelling in the crowd, so the rule was dropped. Looks like most of you agree with that.

I don't remember the roundtable saying outside assistance should be OK. I recal agreeing that it would be DIFFICULT to inforce but , like the rear steer tell tale zip ties, it needs to be inforced. So far none has ever been docked points for any rule breakage that I know of. Nail a couple guys and everyone will police them selves. There isn't a cop every 1/4 mile on the freeway to keep you from speeding but the fact that you know you could be caught by one at any time keeps you from running rampant.

How much do I need to pay my extended spotting staff? Yoder has tapped out my beer budget.

There it is. I missed putting my .o2 in on that one, and I can see the points made are valid so I will back down and agree that we should just let it go the way it has been. There are more important places to use the judges attention and energy toward a fair contest.

I'm making a Lance mask to play havoc with other teams.

Hey, Lance, I resemble that remark about the donunts...... :trooper:
and I have never moved rocks that were stacked. Sure, everyone who has been to an east UROC event knows that I have a big mouth and I ain't afraid to yell. (I am usually looking threw a camera ZOOMED in) and yes it helps.

I can see me taking the binoc's instead of a camera now. :p

Well we took full advantage of this rule this weekend at Neuroc and now most other teams were aware of it and also used it. Torbett brought his usual 12-15 person crew and even other drivers and spotters were helping people on the course. My teams mod class truck had to run with a new spotter this weekend after the normal spotter had to bail last minute, and I stood around most of the courses spotting for them with the spotter stacking rocks and pulling on the rope. It worked well in most instances and several people came up making jokes about him having two spotters. I hope that everyone attending SC will follow Dustin's advice and bring extra "spotters" to move around the course and help so that no one has a big advantage by not using them. Good luck to all the teams making the trip to Salt Lake, Justin
