I'll bet you weren't thinking "hey, that's a nice firewall, I could build a buggy chassis around it" when you drove it home?

Ok.....this is the 3-4th time I've laughed out loud reading this entire build in 2 days....( about 4 hours of my life I won't get back ;) )

Great job.

P.S. you also got me on the April fools joke. I almost shit.

Ok. I need some help here.

Does anyone know where I can find dimensions specs for the LS1? Specifically, I need to know the offset distance between the flat face of the passenger side cylinder head, and the plane of the pulleys for the serpentine system.

Also, there are bolt holes on the front of the cylinder head that I could use a dimensioned drawing of, so that I can cut and drill an accurate plate to bolt on there.

You got that thing back together yet? Can you sit anywhere in your house now

Ok, I'm loading up some pics.

There are a few developments. The links went to the heat treater, came back, got painted and assembled. They're leaning up against the wall in the patio adding to the problem.

The welding control unit went back to the manufacturer and the wiring harness got customized. It came back and it's on the table in the kitchen, adding to the problem.

I bought an additional 4 cases of spray paint. I barbecued 2 briskets, had a dozen friends over at sunrise on Sunday, got the entire chassis finish coated, drank a total of about 4 cases of Corona, ate barbecue, then proceeded to check fit my 3rd version of the alternator bracket and serpentine system. It failed, I disassembled, and the parts are under the coffee table, adding to the problem.

Now, I'm machining a new bracket to move the tensioner to the other side. I cut a block of aluminum to the correct thickness. It's now on the dining room table where I need to mark it for 3 holes and a couple of angles.

Yes, that's adding to the problem too.

However, I'm getting closer.

Here's the beginning/sober part of my paint and barbecue party. These pictures have to be somewhere around 6:30 in the morning. Do you see the cloud of overspray showing up in the sunlight to the right? That cloud was EVERYWHERE, but you can only see it there. The driveway was COVERED in green dust by the end of the day. Lucky for me it just swept up and washed away. Several parts of my lawn are a different shade of green now, with metallic overtones.

By noonish we were getting ready to eat and the beer was helping to combat the mid day sun. Evidently someone else took this pic (I think it was Gina... I seem to recall giving her the camera at some point). That's me hiding in the shade while other people do my work for me.

By afternooon, the paint had dried thoroughly, and the bed liner material on the various bolt on parts had completely cured (and then got heat treated to about 212 degrees until I moved it into the shade).

Here are some of the first pictures of things that are bolted on with some finality which marks the official beginning of "Phase 3" (wherein things get bolted on for real).

In this pic, the roof is going on with a foam weather strip interface between the bars and the plate. Note that the remote fill gas cap is already installed:

As you can see, I tried to respect the classic white Landcruiser roof. Around here, that's actually a really good idea to help beat the heat.

I also indulged myself in another bit of Landcruiser bling:

Also, in that picture, you can see some variation in the paint density. Frankly, when the sun hits it, many places look like ass. I'll do some touch up to even it a bit, but I'm mostly beyond caring.

The hood is an ongoing problem. Several people have tried to make it perfect and it gets boogered one way or another each time. Either it goes on so fast and thin that it's even but rough or else it goes on slow and thick enough that it's glossy, but it has tiger stripes, or runs and sags.

It's actually been painted so much that it can be sanded down again, and STILL have paint on it. That's my next plan... to sand it and buff it to see if I can just make do with what's already on there and make it a somewhat even color coat with some gloss.

This spray paint is NOT designed to spray on large areas with good uniformity. It's for painting kids tricycles... which is why I like it. I'm so done with this... it's a freakin' rock crawler and we've put more work into the hood than a show car deserves. I've got half an impulse to just whack the thing with a sledge and put a big dent into it just to end the anxiety.

Speaking of the end... here's the tail gate with inset panels bolted in. Also, you can see the first two of the rear deck plates with bed liner on them bolted down. The rest are done, but I can't apply them till I put all the parts inside:

Image

If you're wondering why the dashboard and floor boards have been ignored, the unpainted part of the floor gets a pass with bed liner and I'm waiting to do the last part of the tranny hump at the same time (the side parts are done but I have a little work to do on the top piece before it gets primered and coated). The dash is getting modified further to accept some bolt in switch panels and there's no reason to paint it before I cut it.

I'll take some pics of my serpentine system before I install it... that'll be next.

looking good doc! we will be able to track you on the trail by green streaks left by ya on the rocks :)

I can't see being done by mid June which is only about a month off. I'm planning on being done during the summer, though!

As to following me on the trail... I suggest to let me follow YOU guys for a couple of really good reasons:

1) I have no idea what I'm doing so I'm gonna get stuck and plug the trail if I'm picking my own lines.

2) See #1 above.

As to spraying this paint, I'm sure I missed a trick here. My goal was to have a paint coat on there which was out of a rattle can so that I could reapply it in small areas if needed. A clever person, though, would have bought a paint that was available BOTH in rattle cans AND in a bucket so that it could be applied the first time with a spray gun. By the time that lightbulb came on, I'd already mostly coated it... and then found that you can't get this color in a bucket... yet another lesson learned the hard (and probably more expensive) way.

After a couple of good tries at getting a perfect coat... I settled for a slightly boogered up, smooth glossy coat with some "character"... A perfect one-off. ;)

I had spent some time on Sunday afternoon getting a block of aluminum cut to dimensions for machining a spacer bracket that would put the stock GM tensioner, which is designed to bolt up to the passenger's side of the water pump, on the opposite side and up on the cylinder head.

Yesterday, I got that block and was going to mark it for drilling, but the stopped when I inspected it more closely. It wasn't square! I measured it multiple times and the only thing I can conclude is that the vise jaw lifts when it clamps, and that angled the material under the cutter. From side to side the thickness of the block varied by over 10 thousandths in about an inch and a half. However from end to end, I'd managed to get the height uniform to within 2 thou over 6.3 inches.

My vise sucks... but I already knew that. I just don't have time to deal with it before I need to get the engine put back in with the serpentine system complete. I want all the big easy stuff bolted in by the end of the weekend.

I spent the rest of the evening doing trigonometry to make a mechanical drawing of the part which I could give to a machine shop.

This morning, I dropped off the drawing and I'll probably get the part tomorrow. It's stupid simple, but I've got to at least have square corners to start with or else the rest is pointless. I'll re-address my own work holding dilemma later. I'm going to put some money into it when the time is right.
