Love it another CJ with a Matkins frame!! Only thing that made me sad was the Chevy crate engine. But I won't hold that against ya. My frame looked mlike that before I started cutting it up.

Thread Necro :)

Finally nearing completion of this project, nearly 9 years later (14 years if you count the amount of time it has sat since the old straight 6 went poof.)

Several detours on the way, dragged it from Houston to Albuquerque, then a storage unit for several years - then my garage and buying up an engine/axles/parts etc - then sat again (my great intentions on working on it gave way to too much work at my real job) - then to Kansas to have it "professionally" rebuilt/finished - then back home when that deadended - then up to Matt at Rockware late last year for a definitive completion.

Here is how it will end up:

Stayed with the OEM frame as it was in great shape to begin with
GM Goodwrench crate 350 with L82 cam - 80's TBI
NV4500
Atlas 4.3 2 speed case
Front D60 with an ARB 4.56 gears
Rear Currie 9" HD housing - 9+ Race Case - Detroit
4" Deaver Leaf Spring SUA
Rancho Shocks
Refurbished Warn 8274
35" MTR's on chrome wagon wheels
CV Driveshafts
Rockware front and rear bumpers and sliders

This is my wife's CJ. And she wanted something that looked old school but was pretty bulletproof on the trail. She intends to daily drive it some as well.

She intends to put the period correct Renegade sticker package on it as well.

Thanks to those involved in this many year project. But special thanks to Matt Peterson and his crew at Rockware in Colorado Springs. Professional, extremely detail oriented, but tolerant of all our fussiness.

Haha, I see I originally posted this in Hardcore Tech. My how times have changed in the last 10 years.

That was long ago and I was short on cash at the time and sold the Matkins frame to a guy in Las Cruces. In retrospect I should have kept it and used it. At that time I had "bigger" intentions for the CJ with a spring over and 37's.

That Jeep has story to tell!

Why the switch to SUA? Im a fan just curious. Was it for the DD aspect?
Yes it does :)

And yeah on the DD aspect. We have two pretty hardcore wheeling rigs already and the wife wanted this to be more of a DD, but Moab approved rig. The CJ originally had a 2.5" Rancho lift from the early 90's. It was so stiff it would break your teeth off driving around at speed. We had hoped to avoid that stiffness and get a taller lift with the SOA, but ultimately decided on SUA with compliant 4" Deaver springs.

And its pretty much done for now.

I'm going to swap out the L82 cam in the 350 for a more TBI friendly cam this weekend and get some repro Renegade stickers on it.
