TJ Fuel Tank/Cell Option

I've searched, but it seems like most people just throw a fuel cell in the back and call it a day.

I did the notch and shape mod on the stock gas tank, but it no longer enough for the rear stretch that I'm trying to accomplish on my TJ (~6 in.). Unfortunately, I require pretty much all of the bed space, so I would prefer not having a fuel cell taking half that space (and pump noise). The Genright tanks are sweet, but I can't justify spending 1600$ on a gas tank.

What I'm wondering is.. Is there any reason why I couldn't build a skid similar in design to the stock one and but a RCI 2161A in there, in the stock location? It looks like it "should" fit from the measurement I found online. I could even notch the floor to keep ground clearance as high as possible.

Thoughts? Something I'm missing? Other ideas?

Mine is in the tub, behind the rear seat. Yep, it sucks that I lost storage....but that was the sacrifice I was willing to make to get the stretch that I wanted. As was already mentioned, you could cut the floor, and recess a tank there. build a "skid" across the bottom of the frame, and set the tank on it (with some sort of isolator/ dampner) so that it wasn't sitting on the skid. If you're going that route, I'd suggest using the Motobilt TJ tank, instead of the RCI unit. Very similar design, but I believe the Motobilt version is a better product. And it accepts the oem TJ sending unit.

I just took a quick drive to where my TJ is stored (yay living in the city). I currently have 14.5 in. from the floor to the bottom of the skid plate. According to Summit, the 2161 is 12 in. tall. I'm assuming that's the cell only, not including the filler neck and and top fittings.

Counting for the pump, and skid, I'm thinking it would be very close to stock? Unless the online measurement are off.

I also checked the Motobilt cell. Nice design. And same size as the 2161.

Motobilt also makes cells now. They are similar dimensions to the 2161A. I was going to ask him to flip the tank on it’s side and make a version of the 2162a but with Goat Built’s fuel plate pattern cut out. Then run a GM pump because I have an LS. I’m sure he could make the 2162a dimensions with his TJ hardware and ring.
